Street Style Star Miroslava Duma Wears a Patagonia Trucker Hat to Dior Haute Couture Show

Patagonia and Dior? For the first time at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, the unlikely fashion pairing met on an even more implausible person: Miroslava Duma. One of fashion’s biggest street-style stars, Duma showed up at the Dior Haute Couture fall/winter 2017 show on Monday in a trucker hat from the outdoor apparel company.

Spotted in a sea of Dior-clad attendees, including celebrities Diane Kruger, Kirsten Dunst, and social media star Chiara Ferragni, Miroslava stood out in her simple and understated look, featuring a blue blazer, skinny jeans, and navy hat stitched with the iconic Patagonia logo.

This is a bold choice for the petite Russian fashionista, whose usual sartorial credits include luxury designers like Chanel, Christian Dior, Valentino, and Delpozo.

Perhaps Duma’s latest look is a sign that high fashion and sustainable fashion are — finally — intersecting. Patagonia, the biggest powerhouse in the sustainable apparel industry, is leading the revolution toward adopting green practices and incorporating eco-friendly materials. The brand has been a pioneer in sustainable fashion for decades, consistently developing new materials like recycled down and polyester for its collections. Not to mention, on Black Friday last year, Patagonia made headlines by donating 100 percent of its sales to environmental organizations.

Although Patagonia being considered a “fashionable” brand isn’t entirely new either. Patagonia’s Snap-T sweater has witnessed a resurgence among stylish men recently, and the Classic Retro X Fleece has seen similar iterations on the runway in the past by designers like Altuzarra and Louis Vuitton.

And due to the brand’s long-standing heritage, many designers and style editors alike grew up wearing Patagonia in their youth, creating a sense of nostalgia for the brand. Nowadays, incorporating a heritage brand like Patagonia alongside high-end designer pieces is a popular trend. Case in point: one Vogue editor wrote an ode to her love of the “ugly beautiful” sweater.

Patagonia’s rise can also be attributed to “normcore,” which, according to the Wall Street Journal, “is to appropriate relatively mundane items most popular in the 1990s as fashion pieces.”

Which is why it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time Duma has mixed “high and low” or embraced a “casual and cool” look for fashion week, where she’s regularly photographed as a street-style star. During New York Fashion Week last September, Duma was spotted wearing a Google T-shirt with jeans and toting a blazer.

Either Duma is playing into the “normcore” trend, or she is actually making a statement in favor of sustainable fashion. It’s probably just the former — but fingers crossed it’s also the latter.
