Whether you’re a football fan or you just watched Super Bowl LV as an excuse to eat some of the snacks, there’s one discussion point that can bring everyone together, the Super Bowl ads.
As the commercials were rolling out throughout the evening Yahoo Canada asked readers to upvote and downvote the ads they like the best and the ads they really disliked.
According to the votes from Yahoo Canada readers (at the time of publishing), these are the best and worst Super Bowl ads of 2021.
1. M&M's: ‘Come Together’ with Dan Levy
Canadian treasure Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek) had a great moment this weekend, hosting Saturday Night Live and then being featured in this funny ad for M&M’s during the Super Bowl. When it comes to saying “sorry,” the U.S. really needs to turn to a Canadian.
2. Toyota: ‘Upstream’ Jessica Long's Story
The Toyota ad, which tells the adoption story of 13-time Paralympic gold medalist swimmer Jessica Long, will put a smile on anyone’s face, after you maybe shed a happy tear. It’s just the uplifting story we need to hear in 2021.
3. General Motors: ‘No Way Norway’ with Will Ferrell, Awkwafina and Kenan Thompson
Will Ferrell, Awkwafina and Kenan Thompson are three of the funniest people in Hollywood so it’s no surprise that General Motors’ “No Way Norway” commercial got a lot of people laughing on Sunday evening.
4. Jeep: ‘The Middle’ with Bruce Springsteen
It took a few decades but a company finally managed to convince Bruce Springsteen to be featured in a commercial. It’s the narrative of unifying people across the U.S. that allowed Jeep to score the “The Boss” in their ad.
5. Cheetos: ‘It Wasn't Me’ with Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Shaggy
You likely still have the early 2000s Shaggy hit “It Wasn’t Me” stuck in your head the day after the Super Bowl, after watching the Cheetos ad that also features Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. Great song, great snack, great commercial.
Amazon: ‘Alexa's Body’ with Michael B. Jordan
A lot of Yahoo Canada readers like this commercial, but a lot of readers also really didn’t like it. One thing is for sure, people definitely have an opinion on Amazon’s ad featuring Michael B. Jordan as a “beautiful vessel for Alexa to be inside.”
1. Hellmann’s: ‘Fairy Godmayo’ with Amy Schumer
There’s no doubt that Amy Schumer is hysterical, but this ad for Hellmann’s where she’s the “Fair Godmayo” turning leftover food into a bunch of delicious meals just didn’t bring the laughs.
2. Klarna: ‘The Four Quarter-Sized Cowboys’ with Maya Rudolph
Four Maya Rudolphs may make you think that this ad for Klarna is going to be four times as funny as you might expect, but it fell flat. Maybe we’ll just still to one Rudolph in the future.
3. Oatly: ‘Wow No Cow’
Why hire a bunch of famous actors to promote your product when you can just do it yourself? This Oatly ad, which shows the CEO of the company singing a song in a field, may have been too simplistic and a little odd.
