Surprise hair color is the latest gender-reveal trend

Janeese Murphy is a hairstylist from Memphis, Tenn., who has recently launched a line of hair products and extensions. Through her promotions of the line, the Posh Glam Collection, the artist says that her goal is to create an experience through her work. Most recently, she did just that with a styled gender reveal for a friend.

In a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, Murphy documented the hair color she did for her friend and client Dantrielle. Murphy explains to Yahoo Beauty that it was a way to reconnect with her Tennessee-based friend after recently living in Kentucky.

“She’s a friend from high school who I recently reconnected with since moving back to Memphis,” Murphy says. “I’ve been wanting to get my hands in her hair. She wears lots of fashion colors — fun, nontraditional hair colors — and I just wanted to have some fun.”

The opportunity to do just that presented itself naturally, as Dantrielle told the stylist that she was pregnant. Murphy thought it would be fun to do a surprise gender reveal for Dantrielle, who didn’t yet know the sex of her baby.

“I thought it would be perfect for her since wearing fun colors isn’t something out of the norm,” Murphy shares with Yahoo Beauty. “I knew it would be right up her alley. I also have never seen anyone else do it. I love gender reveals, and this idea was intimate and unique.”

Dantrielle immediately agreed to the idea, bringing a sealed envelope to Murphy’s salon right after getting an ultrasound confirming the baby’s sex. Murphy says that she was able to keep the whole thing a surprise by mixing the color in the back and keeping her friend blindfolded while she dyed Dantrielle’s hair. Most important, Murphy made sure the process was baby-safe.

“My client’s hair was already blond, and we didn’t use any bleach,” Murphy assures. “The color used was ammonia-free and never touched her scalp, so it was super safe to do while she was pregnant.”

The video of the final reveal shows Dantrielle getting emotional as she finds out that she’ll be having a daughter. “I didn’t want a boy!” the mother-to-be hilariously exclaims between tears, as she celebrates the news.

Murphy says that the video has since received overwhelmingly positive attention. But the stylist is mainly looking forward to seeing other hairstylists’ take on the idea.
