The Surprising Parenting Hack Both Mindy Kaling and John Legend Rely On

Shopping certainly has changed over the years. It's almost too easy to spend money now: In just a few clicks, you can upgrade to the newest iPhone or transition your wardrobe from summer to fall. But Caruso, the real estate development company responsible for The Grove in L.A., is dead set on getting visitors to revel in the IRL shopping experience once again, and its fancy-shmancy malls certainly help.

Thursday marked the opening celebration of the newest property in their portfolio, Palisades Village, nestled in Los Angeles’s pristine Pacific Palisades community, which A-listers like Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon and Steven Spielberg call home. The black-tie gala attracted the likes of Charlize Theron, Mindy Kaling, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Zoe, and Katherine Schwarzenegger. Guests enjoyed a seated dinner before being treated to a performance by the one and only John Legend, before an epic fireworks show.

Palisades Village is a fashion destination in its own right, featuring storefronts from coveted brands like Zimmermann, Rachel Zoe, Anine Bing, A.L.C, Jennifer Meyer and the very first brick-and-mortar for Lauren Conrad and Hannah Skvarla's The Little Market. "Hannah and I can't believe the doors are finally open to our first shop," Conrad gushed to InStyle.

Mindy Kaling is excited about the opening for different reasons; for her, venturing out on a shopping excursion counts as quality family time. The Ocean's Eight actress (and new mom to nine-month-old daughter Katherine) told InStyle, “I used to exclusively shop online, and now that I have a baby, I actually look forward to shopping jaunts, because for her it’s really fun to just go somewhere.” Kaling, who stunned in a form-fitting Alice and Olivia dress, has yet to give fans a glimpse of her baby girl, but she's been quite vocal about motherhood since giving birth last fall. "Part of being a mom is just finding new experiences for your child — brand new experiences, because they get bored with everything. So, I’m now actually doing more going out to stores and shopping, and she loves it.”

John Legend agrees. The singer, who officially reached EGOT status with his recent Emmy win for Jesus Christ Superstar!, joked that shopping IRL is more fun when it’s a family affair. “It’s actually more fun to go out shopping with the kids — like, physically go — when you’re shopping for the kids. So, for that purpose, I love going out shopping and strolling around.” Make no mistake, though: Online shopping is still his go-to move. "For me? I’m shopping at home,” he jokes. Same, John. Same.

Palisades Village officially opens for business Saturday, Sept. 22. Check out to full list of retailers at palisadesvillageca.com.
