Courtney Love: ‘I thought: this dress is crazy-looking, but I’ll make it work’

‘I felt like I looked pretty good’ ... Courtney Love arrives at the Golden Globes in 2000. Photograph: Bei/Rex/ShutterstockI was going to wear Versace to the Golden Globes in 2000 – it was already in my wardrobe – but the dress I ended up wearing was from John Galliano’s Christian Dior haute couture collection that was “inspired” by homelessness [the New York Times described the contentious collection as “tasteless chic”]. My good friends Arianne Phillips [the costume designer] and Joe Mama-Nitzberg [the artist] called me and said: “You have to wear couture!” I didn’t really get couture until this. My mind was blown – I thought: “This is what they were talking about.”The dress arrived and it was ridiculous. It was straight up and down and had twine on it. On the twine there was a book of matches, glass, all this taxidermy. I remember thinking: “OK, it’s crazy-looking, but I’ll make it work.”I lived next door to Carrie Fisher at the time and Meryl Streep happened to be at her house. I put the dress in an Armani carry bag and told my daughter, Frances, to give it to Meryl. She came back with a polaroid of Meryl goofing around in the gown and I just lost it; it was so funny.I made alterations, which really changed the dress. My assistant’s boyfriend was very slender and about my height, so he became my model. I was taking bits off, sewing on to it. I bite my nails, so I wore acrylics, but they were painted turquoise with glitter streaks to match my original outfit. I am a big believer in matchy-matchy, but [when I changed my choice of dress] I didn’t have time to take them off. I also did stupid stuff like jump up and down on a mini trampoline with my arms and legs in plastic bags so I would lose sweat weight, but I fit into it and I felt like I looked pretty good.A lot went into this look and it was controversial when I wore it. I have big boobs and it was important that they didn’t fall out. I don’t think tit-tape really works and looking back I don’t know how I kept it on – it was a miracle. I think maybe I glued it.

Jennifer Aniston turns 50: A celebration of the actress' classic red carpet style

It’s hard to believe, but Jennifer Aniston turns 50 today. The ‘Friends’ star became a global style sensation during the popular sitcom’s run and even sparked one of the biggest hair trends of the 90s: ‘The Rachel’ cut. Since ‘Friends’, Aniston’s taken to hundreds of red carpets, debuting her classic, sartorial prowess on a regular basis. The actress’ fashion formula is well-established. She’s always had a penchant for black dresses, which she’s worn on repeat, in various styles, over the years. There’s also the odd pop of red peppered with a couple of subtle, pastel shades. Some might call the star’s wardrobe unexciting, but there’s something to be said for simple, sleek style that stands the test of time and isn’t dictated by current trends. In celebration of the actress’ big day, we chart Jennifer Aniston’s greatest fashion hits to date – from a plunging Versace number, worn at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in LA in 2017 to a metallic mini worn to an awards event in 2009.

    Céline Dion's style evolution

Over the past few years, Céline Dion has become almost as famous for her fashion as her extraordinary vocal range. The singer, who  lost her husband Rene Angélil to throat cancer in 2016 , made a triumphant return to the spotlight in 2017 in a plethora of show-stopping ensembles. Since then, the 50-year-old’s sartorial prowess has only strengthened.  Whether she’s on the front row at  Haute Couture Fashion Week  or photographed at the GRAMMY Awards, Céline’s topped numerous best dressed lists in recent years thanks to her bold fashion looks. It’s not just Céline that deserves recognition for her stream of successful style choices; stylist-to-the-stars  Law Roach  is the man who ensured the performer was armed and ready for her year following her husband’s tragic passing. The self-proclaimed ‘image maker’, who started out owning a vintage store,  hasn’t just transformed Céline. He also styles  Zendaya  – another of Hollywood’s most fashion-forward residents. He’s also styled Ariana Grande and Jessie J, among others. “I love my girls,” Roach told  Fashionista . “I am at a place right now where I really love my roster. They are all so different, but at the same time they are all kind of the same.” It was Roach’s six-year-long collaboration with Zendaya that caused Céline to reach out initially. Since, she’s worn some of the most popular labels in existence, including Vetements, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Off-White.  A quick glance through the Canadian’s style file, and it’s clear she’s always been a sharp dresser. Her 2000s wardrobe was full of slinky gowns and on-trend wardrobe essentials such as pedal pushers, denim jackets and pastel jeans. She’s clearly a woman who loves style – and experimenting with it. Scroll through to see the singer’s most lauded looks of all time.

From Céline Dion to Kristen Stewart, all the celebrity style at Haute Couture Fashion Week

From Naomi Campbell ‘s surprise runway return for Valentino to Viktor and Rolf’s meme-inspired dresses , Haute Couture Fashion Week has provided some serious desk-side chatter. Renowned for its dreamlike creations and purse-load of zeros price tags, the world of couture is seriously exclusive – giving the industry’s elite the perfect chance to demonstrate their sartorial prowess via the FROW. Thankfully, Céline Dion has continued to defend her position as reigning Queen of Couture this season in a series of gram-worthy outfit changes. First up, she watched the  Alexandre Vauthier SS19 show unfold in a thigh-high split dress by the designer. Just a mere few hours later, she switched up the drama in a bow-embellished shirt and co-ordinating trousers for the  Giorgio Armani Privé runway – where she gave the main man himself a quick post-show hug. Over at Chanel , brand ambassador Kristen Stewart stole the spotlight in a cropped jacket (in trademark  bouclé of course) with metallic low-slung trousers and millennial-style sunnies to finish. Meanwhile, fellow actress Marion Cotillard demonstrated how to work the cycling short trend in the winter months with a chic quilted bum bag to hand. From rising star Rami Malek at Dior to a Valentino-clad Kristin Scott Thomas (we need her coat), here’s who wore what at Haute Couture Fashion Week.
