It was announced this morning that Maria Grazia Chiuri, formerly co-creative director of Valentino, has been appointed as the creative director of Christian Dior — an especially noteworthy installment, given that she is the first female head of a label that is often described as a bastion of Parisian femininity. The unveiling follows months of speculation after Raf Simons’s departure from Dior in October last year. Pierpaolo Piccioli, with whom Chiuri ran Valentino, will remain at the Italian label as its sole chief.

“Even though there’s not a ton of people that look like me on television or that are interested in my field, I had a feeling of wanting to do it, even though I didn’t necessarily have that role model,” Mindy Kaling tells Yahoo Style contributor Sophie Tweed-Simmons in this episode of Style Session. She’s the force behind two television hits—The Office and The Mindy Project—a comedienne, and the author of “Why Not Me”—her latest New York Times best-selling novel. You can’t get much cooler, funnier, or brighter than Kaling, though she’d beg to differ.
Photography by Hedi Slimane The Haute Couture shows recently wrapped in Paris, and even though they are considered the most exquisite in all of fashion land, it seems that not everyone wants to play the strict rules of the Fédération Française de la Couture. Each piece will be decided upon on a case by case basis and will include a numbered silk ivory label which will be recorded in the “Monogram House Couture book held by the premier d’atelier flou.” The line will not only be designed by Slimane, but he will also personally decide who among the global glitterati is worthy enough to wear his custom creations. The world has been looking to the Italians for fashion inspiration for decades, but for Fall 2015 Haute Couture, the House of Valentino went back a few centuries to Ancient Rome for hair inspiration. The show, appropriately set in the modern city of Rome, attempted to bring back the Roman Forum, where city life once congregated and flourished. Accompanying gladiator-inspired dresses and sandals were “Game of Thrones”-reminiscent romantic braids, crowns, and delicate gold wreaths embellished with gold stars and seals, all styled by Guido Palau.
