Tamera Mowry-Housley Has Made Cooking a Family Affair During Quarantine

From Woman's Day

Ask any one of Tamera Mowry-Housley's family members, and they'll tell you she is something of a Breakfast Queen. "Breakfast is my specialty," the actress tells Woman's Day. "My kids actually told me they like my pancakes better than their dad's." The trick, she says is to mix a little vanilla extract and cinnamon in the batter (and if you really want to excite the kids, some miniature chocolate chips). And of course breakfast wouldn't be complete without bacon, which she also has perfected with a few tips and tricks.

"Set the oven on 425, put some tin foil on the pan, and put it in the oven to bake for 15 to 20 minutes," she says, insisting the strips of bacon will come out perfectly crispy sans a greasy mess. "You just roll up the tin foil, and bam, done," she says. "You don't have to do all that crazy cleaning."

It seems Mowry-Housley has tricks for just about everything in the kitchen, which has come in handy during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent months spent in quarantine. As evidenced by her social media presence, especially her YouTube vlogging channel The Housley Life which boasts over 300,000 subscribers, cooking has played a vital role in bringing the family together during a time of so much uncertainty and duress. "I absolutely love to cook," Mowry-Housley says. "We grew up cooking. My mom had me in the kitchen when i was like 8. So cooking is definitely a part of our lives, and I love it."

Though breakfast is where she really shines, Mowry-Housley enjoys indulging in some sweet treats, too. She recently partnered with Lucky Charms cereal for its new Just Magical Marshmallows packs, and has been using the marshmallows to make cups of hot chocolate a little more exciting.

As much as she's been loving all the extra family time in the kitchen, Mowry-Housley has been using quarantine as a time to practice getting better at taking some time just for herself. "I've always struggled with balance," she says. "As I've grown up, I've realized that the whole juggling thing can be challenging for me." Recently, her favorite way to practice self-care has been to light some candles, turn some music on, and take a relaxing bath. "Most of the time, no joke, after the kids know where I am, they will make their way into the bathroom, start bringing their toys, start playing," she laughs. "But it's better than nothing."

Mowry-Housley is anticipating a bit more alone time in the near future, though, when she will begin filming her upcoming Hallmark Christmas movie Christmas Carnival. "I got to do a Hallmark film last year, and I fell in love with it," she says, sharing that she's excited to be acting in and producing this upcoming film.

With all the changes afoot, and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, Mowry-Housley has found a source of calm in the traditions she has enjoyed since childhood, as well as the new ones she's building with her own children. Whether that's cooking a big breakfast for the whole family, teaching the kids new recipes, or picking out which Lucky Charms marshmallow is her favorite (it's the unicorn), Mowry-Housley is finding peace in the kitchen.
