Tarek El Moussa says filming 'Flip or Flop' with ex-wife Christina Anstead was 'a lot more difficult than you would think'

Tarek El Moussa was introduced into the homes of millions with his HGTV series Flip or Flop alongside his then-wife, Christina Meursinge Haack Anstead. But following their divorce, he’s ready to step out on his own with a new project.

In an interview with BUILD Series, El Moussa talked about his new show, Flipping 101 w/Tarek El Moussa and the tough road that ultimately opened the door for new opportunities.

Prior to Flipping 101, El Moussa co-starred in the HGTV hit Flip or Flop with Christina Meursinge Haack Anstead, which premiered in 2013. The couple captured audiences with their chemistry and ability to turn neglected properties into beautiful new homes. Then in 2016, the duo went through a very public split. But what some fans may not know is that El Moussa and Anstead continued to work together as they were working through their divorce.

“The wildest thing about it is we never took a break,” El Moussa said. “We filmed through the entire divorce and as you could imagine, it was a lot more difficult than you would think. But we pulled it off. We pulled it off and looking back, I don't know how we did it, but we did it.”

Since then, El Moussa and Anstead have created a healthy co-parenting relationship and also have separate shows. Anstead, who has since remarried, is now the star of Christina on the Coast and El Moussa said things could not be better between them.

“Things are great. Our relationship is great. You know, the kids are doing amazing. We live a block from each other ... I couldn't be happier,” he said. “Heather Rae Young’s in my life right now and she’s been fantastic, and my kids adore her. And it’s nice to have a family again. Things are good,” he said.

The HGTV veteran is “really excited” to have his own show, calling it a “huge opportunity.”

While he says it was a seamless transition from co-starring to being at the helm of his own show, his new endeavor hasn’t been all smooth sailing.

“It was about halfway through the flip and it was a high-end home in Los Angeles, California and it was a big storm, and almost half the house burnt down. It was wild,” he shared. “I’ve bought houses that have burned down, I’ve bought houses that have mold and flood and asbestos, but I’ve never had a project down mid-construction.”

Flipping 101 w/Tarek El Moussa premieres March 5 at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV.
