How Taylor Swift Became Friends With Sophie Turner After Her Split From Joe Jonas
Taylor Swift and Sophie Turner’s recent girls’ night out sparked an excited uproar from fans of both stars—with some raising eyebrows at the timing of their dinner date, since they now share a mutual ex in Joe Jonas. But, as a source divulged to Entertainment Tonight, the two became friends before Turner and Jonas filed for divorce earlier this month.
“They are fans of each other and have been friends for a while,” the source explained, adding that Swift and Turner “have always liked and respected each other.”
“Sophie doesn’t care that Taylor dated Joe. It was so long ago and in the past. Taylor has a good time when she’s with Sophie and they enjoyed some fun girl time together [on Tuesday night],” the insider said.
Swift and Jonas briefly dated in 2008, a relationship that would inspired the singer’s breakup anthems “Forever & Always” and “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” and lead to Swift claiming on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Jonas dumped her in a 27-second phone call.
By now, the spurned ending to their short-lived romance is water under the bridge. Fans even speculated that Swift referenced the couple in her Folklore track, “Invisible String,” with the lyrics: “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind / For the boys who broke my heart / Now I send their babies presents.”
Of Swift and Turner’s recent night out together, and eyewitness told ET, “Sophie seemed to be happy and enjoying the night. They seemed to be having the best time—they were laughing and chitchatting with the waitstaff and drinking martinis.”
Turner and Jonas officially married in 2019. Since, they have welcomed two children: three-year-old Willa and a one-year-old daughter whose name has not yet been publicly disclosed. The couple confirmed their plans to divorce on September 6.
“After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” a joint statement posted to social media read. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
