Taylor Swift and Matty Healy: A Relationship Timeline

·8 min read

Well, it's happening... or is it? Taylor Swift and Matty Healy of The 1975 have been sparking romance rumors for years, but it seems like the two might be on the fast track to love. (TBH, we have some mixed feelings.) The pair have a lot in common: they're musicians, they're good friends with producer Jack Antonoff, and — oh! We can't forget to add that Healy is British, making him 100% Swift's type.

Healy, like her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, is a "London Boy," born in Swift's favorite city in 1989 (easter egg, anyone?). The evidence presented that the pair is moving quickly from friends to lovers is certainly… compelling.

Before we continue, we want to provide a gentle reminder that dating rumors should always be taken with a massive grain of salt, especially when they're attributed to anonymous sources and not the celebrities or their reps. Until we hear it from Swift or Healy themselves, this is all just speculation. But boy, is there speculation — and paparazzi pics, and TikToks aplenty. Let's revisit the ups and downs of Swift and Healy's potential love story with their complete relationship timeline.

November 2014: Swift wears a 1975 tour tee and gives Healy her number.

Swift and Healy have been subject to romantic gossip for nearly a decade; back in 2014, fans thought there was something going on between the two when Swift was spotted at a 1975 show in Los Angeles and was later snapped in a tour tee. Healy later returned the favor and hit the stage in a 1989 tee and confirmed that Swift did give him her phone number.

January 2015: Healy shoots down dating rumors.

However, it appeared that Healy didn’t actually use Swift’s number to set up a date. He told an interviewer that there was nothing romantically going on between them. "We met each other, we exchanged numbers in the same way that a lot of people in this kind of world do, and we spoke occasionally," Healy said at the time. "She's the biggest pop star in the world and I'm in Australia. There's no relationship or anything happening. It's just funny how people really, really buy into that."

March 2016: Healy calls his relationship with Swift “a flirtation.”

In a rather… polarizing interview from 2016 where he said dating Swift would be “emasculating,” Healy dismissed the relationship rumors as nothing more than a “flirtation” between the two. “I don’t do anything else, right, so it doesn’t leave a lot of room for me going out, or shagging someone,” he said at the time. “So the one time I did have a flirtation with a girl it ends up going everywhere… I mean, I got on E! News and people were like, ‘Who’s Matt Healy?’ so that was cool.”

“It’s not really anything to talk about, because if she wasn’t Taylor Swift we wouldn’t be talking about her," Healy continued. "She wasn’t a big impact on my life. It’s just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift.” Yes, very interesting, indeed.

November 29, 2022: Healy says The 1975 collaborated on Midnights.

While they may not have dated in the 2010s, the two clearly stayed in touch over the years. Fast forward to 2022, when Healy shared that he and his bandmates teamed up with Swift for her tenth studio album Midnights, but the songs they worked on remain in the revered Taylor Swift vault. "We actually worked a bit on that but then the version of it never came out," Healy explained. "It was for reasons that are not to be criticized. She's amazing."

January 12, 2023: Swift joins The 1975 onstage in London.

1975 fans got the thrill of a lifetime when Swift sauntered onstage at the band’s January 12 show in London to perform their song “The City” and her song “Anti-Hero” on acoustic guitar.

April 2023: Swift splits with longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

In the breakup heard ‘round the world, Swift and her partner of six years, actor Joe Alwyn, parted ways in the spring of 2023. To this day, neither party has officially acknowledged the breakup, but sources said the split was “amicable” and “not dramatic.” Shortly thereafter, rumors about Swift and Healy began to swirl.

May 3, 2023: The Sun claims Swift and Healy are “madly in love.”

The Sun, a British publication, initially claimed that Swift and Healy were planning to "go public" with their relationship during her Eras Tour stop in Nashville, though that didn’t exactly come to fruition. A source told the publication that the two are "madly in love" (again, grain of salt!).

“It’s super-early days, but it feels right. They first dated, very briefly, almost ten years ago but timings just didn’t work out. Taylor and Joe actually split up back in February, so there was absolutely no crossover," claimed an insider. Celebrity gossip Instagram page DeuxMoi also picked up the scent, claiming that Swift's pal Jack Antonoff, who has worked with both singers, was potentially involved in setting the two up, despite the fact that they've known each other for years.

May 6, 2023: Healy joins Phoebe Bridgers onstage at Eras Tour in Nashville.

Not only was Healy in attendance at all three nights of Swift’s Nashville tour stops, but Healy actually played with Phoebe Bridgers as the opening act for the show. He then headed back to the VIP area to watch Swift perform alongside her bestie Gigi Hadid, and was spotted singing along to basically every song.

May 5, 2023: Swift mouths a cryptic message while onstage in Nashville.

To add even more fuel to the fire, Swift and Healy were both seen mouthing the same message at separate tour dates. During one of her Nashville shows, Swift turned to the camera and wordlessly said, "This is about you. You know who you are. I love you."

Healy had done the same at a 1975 show in early May. It certainly feels intentional, and we know Swift doesn't do anything without a cryptic reason behind it; if this is a declaration of love, well, you can't get more public than the Eras Tour. (Maybe the message is just a teaser for a future musical collaboration and not a romantic one? Fingers crossed.)

May 12, 2023: Swift and Healy are seen holding hands in New York.

Swift and Healy were spotted together in New York City celebrating their mutual friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff. People reports that Swift and Healy were seen holding hands at Casa Cipriani (there are pics!) and Page Six claims they were "cuddling and kissing" throughout the entire evening.

May 13, 2023: Healy is spotted at a Swift show with her dad.

Meeting the parents already? Eagled-eyed fans noticed one new presence alongside Swift’s dad, Scott, in the VIP tent at her Philadelphia show. You guessed it: Healy, who apparently can’t get enough of Eras Tour. (We don’t blame him for that.) Vanity Fair also reports that a Swiftie at the concert asked Healy to blink twice if he and Swift were indeed dating, and he reportedly confirmed with both a double-blink and a nod. Hmm.

May 15, 2023: Swift and Healy leave an NYC recording studio together.

Are Swift and Healy making music together metaphorically, or literally? The two were snapped leaving the historic Electric Lady recording studio in Greenwich Village together, with Swift wearing a purple NYU sweatshirt and black mini skirt. The two were notably not holding hands, but Healy did appear to place his hand on Swift’s back as they navigated the crowd. Welcome (back) to New York, indeed!

While on the Massachusetts stop of the Eras Tour, Swift made a rare, candid address to fans before performing her Midnights record “Question…?”

"I kinda just want to tell you… I don't know, I've just never been this happy in my life in all aspects of my life ever before," Swift declared out into the raving audience, per a TikTok that caught her entire speech. "And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. It's not just a tour, I just sort of feel like my life finally feels like it makes sense. So I thought I'd play this song which brings me a lot of happy memories."

This grand — and surprisingly personal — proclamation of happiness from Swift comes a little over a month after the news of her breakup with Joe Alwyn, and only a few weeks after the dating rumors about her and Matty Healy began to swirl.

“IN ALL ASPECTS?!” commented one fan under the TikTok video of Swift's confession. “Good girl, sad boy, big city, wrong choice[s]” ….. 👀," wrote another, reciting lyrics from “Question…?” that seem to be quite fitting for Swift's current, rumored romantic situation. While these latest comments might spark even more questions for Swifties, the fan who posted the TikTok of the singer's speech has zero: “I heard her loud and clear.”
