There's been a lot of speculation about a) when Taylor Swift found time to write The Tortured Poets Department, and b) whether or not it's at least in part a breakup album about Joe Alwyn based on some of the song titles. And it looks like Taylor went ahead and clarified the timeline of it all while performing in Tokyo last night.

"I’ve been working on Tortured Poets since right after I turned in Midnights,"Taylor explained. "So, you turn in an album months in advance so you can make vinyls, which are the best. And so I started working on it immediately after that and I've been working on it for about two years. I kept working on it throughout the US tour, and when it was perfect, in my opinion, when it was good enough for you, I finished it. And I am so so excited that soon you'll get to hear it, soon we’ll get to experience it together."

Sooooo when it comes to the whole"is this about Joe Alwyn" discourse, once again: Tay's been working on Tortured Poets for two years, while she and Joe broke up a little under a year ago. That said, songs like "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys," "So Long, London" and "Fresh Out the Slammer" (which fans think is a reference to "you can be my jailer") certainly have people speculating that at least some of these songs were written post-April 2023!
