TCU has a moment of silence to honor Wes Smith, student who was fatally shot

TCU had a moment of silence at the start of their season opener for Wes Smith, a TCU student who was fatally shot in the West 7th district on Friday.

A picture of Wes was shown on the Jumbotron accompanied by the words “In Loving Memory.”

Smith was a TCU junior from Germantown, Tenn., who had previously walked on to the football team during the 2021 season.

Smith was killed in the early hours of Friday morning by Matthew Purdy, 21, who didn’t give officers a clear motive for the shooting.

Smith was mourned by family and friends who said the TCU junior was a joy to be around.

His fraternity Kappa Sigma put a banner in his honor saying “Win 4 Wes.”
