Teacher Tells Little Girl Fighting Cancer That Bald Isn't Pretty

Children often look to adults for guidance and support in school. They never expect their teachers to make them feel bad, especially during a difficult time in their lives. However, one teacher at an elementary school in Pennsylvania did exactly that.
Five-year-old MaKayla Welsh was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was just four years old. She is now in remission, but her hair continues to fall out from intense rounds of chemotherapy. Luckily, MaKayla is able to go to school, but it isn't easy for her. Along with trying to feel healthy every day, she is insecure about her hair loss. So when a substitute teacher at her Canonsburg-McMillan District school made a terrible comment about being bald, she was devastated.
According to WPXI News, the teacher thought MaKayla had been pulling out her own hair, and to make her stop, told her that if she was bald, she wouldn't be pretty anymore. "She's beautiful all the time. I don't care if she has hair or not," said MaKayla's mom Nicole Welsh, who was devastated when her daughter told her what happened.
Welsh proceeded to contact the school's principle who vowed nothing like that would happen again. Welsh also said that MaKayla's class watched a video that would explain to the other students exactly what she was going through. "When the video was done, the whole class rallied around and hugged her. She was excited and couldn't wait to go to school," said Welsh.
MaKayla's mom, who is still upset by what happened, says she only has one thing to say to that teacher who hurt her daughter. "Be careful on how you word things to children," she warned. "Words can hurt a lot more than anything else. They can stick with you forever."
