Texas station cancels newscasts after sudden death of 27-year-old director
A local news station in Texas canceled its morning newscast on Tuesday, due to mourning the sudden loss of the segment’s news director.
ABC affiliate KVII reports that Malcolm Montgomery “left this world doing what he most loved” after the 27-year-old abruptly died while finishing preparations for that morning’s newscast. The Daybreak and Midday shows that Montgomery directed didn’t take place that day, while the tragedy was shared with viewers during a later newscast. A cause of death wasn’t immediately released.
Multiple members of the KVII staff made statements about the young man, his work ethic and his ability to keep everyone calm during the “stressful storm” that is the morning news.
“He made a big impact on the lives of his ABC 7 family,” one of the station’s anchors said. “His smile and laugh were so infectious that it was hard to walk into the control room and maintain a frown.”
A fellow news director and a good friend of Montgomery’s added, “He is a hard worker and even better friend. He will always be a part of me, and his touch on this world will not be forgotten.”
The station’s chief meteorologist, Steve Kersh, also took to his Facebook page that evening to share the news, where hundreds of viewers have since reacted to the shocking loss.
