The Duchess of Cambridge’s Canada tour style: 2011 versus now

The Duchess and Duke of Cambridge arrived in Canada just a day ago for their royal tour, and the couple have already been busy with day two of their many public engagements.

And it hasn’t taken long for Kate Middleton to have a memorable style moment - two, in fact.

Upon the royal couple’s arrival just after 4pm in Vancouver (midnight over here in the UK), the Duchess went for an elegant outfit in a blue Jenny Packham dress teamed with a Locke and Co hat - finishing off the look with the Queen’s own sparkling maple leaf diamond.

But what’s been drawing everyone’s attention is Kate’s choice of frock for her second day of the tour: A stunning red and white patterned Alexander McQueen dress.

Worth £4,000, it’s a departure from the Duchess’ more classic look the day before, featuring a button-up detail, two-tiered skirt and above-the-knee hemline to make it the perfect blend of bold and pretty.

And while the red and white are gorgeous colours in themselves, we also love that the combo is a clever nod to the country’s flag’s colours.

Kate paired the frock with colour-blocking accessories, including a matching red clutch and and pair of red suede court shoes.

If we take a look back at Kate’s style back in 2011, the year of her first Canada and US tour and just months after her wedding, we can see how her style confidence has grown in leaps and bounds.

While Kate’s love of suede court shoes and above-the-knee dresses has stayed strong since 2011, we rarely see her in colours as bold as today’s as she opts for subtler tones such as on this Whistles dress.

Although prints were as tasteful as ever, they’re notably understated in comparison to her striking look today.

Jenny Packham was still a firm favourite as she braved the Calgary winds in this pastel yellow dress and nude heels.

And it’s impossible to forget those cowboy hats on the couple’s Calgary visit - who knows if we’ll be seeing the Duchess in jeans again for her 2016 tour.

One accessory has remained a feature of both of the Duchess’ visits, however, and that’s the Queen’s maple leaf.
