Meghan Markle's silver bracelet has a very significant meaning
On Monday, to mark World Elephant Day, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared a series of never-before-seen photos of their trip to Botswana in 2017. While there, they both assisted Dr. Mike Chase of Elephants Without Borders in equipping elephants with satellite collars.
In one photo, Duchess Meghan is seen holding an elephant’s trunk while wearing a meaningful piece of jewelry. Aside from her Hamsa Ring from Turkish jewelry designer Kismet by Milk (which is known to be a staple in her wardrobe), on her left wrist, she debuted a silver steel version of an African elephant hair bracelet.
According to Hello!, people in Africa believe elephants symbolize the connecting factor between heaven and earth. Traditional styles of this bracelet featured real elephant hair which is believed to bring good luck, health, love and prosperity. And while Meghan’s bracelet is an updated version, it still holds the same cultural significance. In fact, modern-day elephant hair bracelets are now made from different materials, most often wire and beads.
Elephant bracelets typically feature two, four or six knots that also hold hold significant meaning. Two knots (as seen on Meghan) represent fertility, nature and ancestors. Considering the photos were taken pre-baby Archie, we can’t help but wonder if baby plans were on the brain during this trip.
The royal couple are said to bring Prince Archie on their tour to southern Africa in the fall.
