If you grew up in the tanning bed era, you most likely look back at your earlier years with regret for what you put your skin through. Now that those days are long gone (and if they aren’t - they should be ASAP), you are most likely aware of the importance of revisiting your skincare routine each season.

While this can changes depending on the time of day, here are some general guidelines to keep your skin glowing in the summer months.

Get clean

When the sun is hot and the humidity gets to you, cold cream can be the greatest relief during the warm weather. Cold cream comes in handy to get rid of the layer of makeup and dirt from the day, regardless of whether you sat on your couch all afternoon or endured the 45 minute subway commute. Another light makeup remover option is micellar water. If you haven’t gotten into this trend, you need to hop on board. This magical water removes any dirt/sweat from your skin while making your face feel clean and au naturel.

Once you’re fresh faced, key into a deeper clean. Arguably, one of the greatest summer skin saviours is a tea tree exfoliating cleanser. Light for the summer months, this cleanser will clear away any dead skin leaving your skin feeling fresh and tingly. However, when it comes to exfoliating, be gentle with your skin, especially during sundress season. Exfoliating eliminates any dead skin which leaves you looking and feeling brighter, but keep in mind this can also make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Brighten and protect

If you’re a fan of sunscreen, you may find you’re missing out on some of the skin-illuminating perks of the sun. Using a brightening serum can help with this; you get the same effect without causing any skin damage. The Body Shop’s Drops of Light line works like a dream to bring dull skin to life. Swipe the lotion (similar to a toner) across your face before applying the serum and let it soak in.

If you’re heading out for the day, it’s important to apply sunblock before your moisturizer. When it comes to year-round skincare, it’s no surprise that SPF is the MVP. Sunblock should be the one constant in your skincare routine, regardless of if there’s snow on the ground or sun in the sky.

Get your glow on

Once the sunblock is applied, follow with a tinted moisturizer. This emphasizes the effects of the brightening serum and gives you a sun-kissed glow without risking your skin health. In the summer months, you have full permission to bypass the foundation and keep it light, using a tinted moisturizer as your makeup base.

It’s also worth noting that during patio season, you can give your night cream a break because the warmer weather acts a natural moisturizer. When the months get colder this extra step is absolutely necessary, but in the summer you’re better off sidelining the night cream to let your skin breathe.

Enjoy your summer months without worrying about what that means for your skin. Lather up on SPF often and soak up the warmer weather while you can!
