According to Netflix co-CEO, the Korean drama Squid Game is a certified hit, and there's "a very good chance it's going to be our biggest show ever." Not only is the series tense, with life-or-death stakes and huge plot turns in every episode, it's got all of the makings of great Halloween costume fodder.
It debuted in mid-September, so it's still on top of everyone's mind. It's got horror elements, with a high body count after each of the show's brutal "games." It's got eye-catching iconography, with instantly recognizable looks for guards, players and VIPs. And yet, it's pretty easy to throw together a costume at the last minute, since the characters mostly wear regular clothes and masks. If you haven't figured out what you're going as this year, consider one of these Squid Game Halloween costumes.
Squid Game Player Halloween Costumes
Whether you want to dress as main character Seong Gi-hun (456), the wily Kang Sae-byeok (067) or the villainous Jang Deok-su (101), well, they all pretty much wear the same thing: teal tracksuits, teal baseball tees underneath and white slip-on shoes. The only thing that separates the characters is their numbers, which you can re-create with iron-on patches.
Squid Game Guard Halloween Costumes
Never before have fencing masks and red coveralls looked so sinister. (The good news is, if you dressed as one of the characters from Us a couple years ago, you can re-use the red jumpsuit.) The only distinguishing characteristic the guards have is the shape on their masks, so choose wisely: circle, triangle or square.
The 'Red Light, Green Light' Girl
The activation of this doll-like machine is the first indication you get that something is off in the actual Squid Game. It looks innocent, but if you don't follow its rules, it becomes deadly. That puts it in the pantheon of creepy doll-like creations, like Chucky or Annabelle. And yet, its outfit looks anything but terrifying.
The Behind-the-Scenes Squid Game Characters
While all the players are fighting and strategizing for their lives, there's much more going on behind the game. There's the enigmatic Front Man, running the show from behind his craggy mask. There's the VIPs, pulling the strings while betting on their players in their gold animal masks. And then there's Hwang Jun-ho, who dresses as a server to try and figure out what's going on. For these costumes, the mask is everything.
