There's Now a Robotic 'Gynecologist' That Can Perform Surgery On You

From Redbook

In futuristic news, a robot 'gynecologist' has arrived in a New York hospital, and it's ready to give you the gyno services of your nightmares/dreams, depending on your tastes.

From a technical standpoint, it's pretty cool, and it's not really a robot gyno named Dr. Metalfingers; rather, it's a robot that can assist a human performing gynecological surgery, with help of someone operating it. According to DNAInfo, this robot - called da Vinci (because your body is a work of art) was actually given the OK by the FDA back in 2000, and it's just now getting into action at the Elmhurst Hospital, which has become the first public hospital in New York to use the robot. Da Vinci surgical robots have also been used to perform other types of surgery, including urological and colorectal surgery.

If this freaks you out, it shouldn't: There are actually a lot of perks to performing surgery this way. For one, the robot - which can even be used to remove tumors - uses several small incisions as opposed to one large incision. Additionally, it can make surgery less painful and lowers the risk of possible infections.

"Robotic surgery has several important benefits, including faster recovery times and less blood loss," Barry Brown, the director of OB/GYN services at Elmhurst Hospital, said in a statement. "Women who in the past would have been hospitalized for a week are now able to go home in a day."

We're living in the future, really.
