Elmo is starting August with another fun challenge: a scavenger hunt! The Sesame Workshop will debut a new, half-hour special, Elmo's Playdate: Scavenger Hunt, on August 6. In it, Elmo and Abby team up for a virtual scavenger hunt, aided by friends like Big Bird, Grover, Rosita, Oscar the Grouch, and Bert and Ernie (along with some celebs like Amy Sedaris and Gabrielle Union, who lead kids in crafts and songs).

The best part is that kids get to play along, too. They can download and print a free worksheet with the items that Elmo and Abby are looking for. As they're found, kids can color them in or cross them off the list. So if anyone is worried about kids and screen time (though, at this point in the year, we're guessing all screen-time rules have gone out the window already), the special offers lots of opportunities for analog fun, too. So it's definitely worth penciling into the calendar.

How to Watch and Stream Elmo's Playdate: Scavenger Hunt

Elmo's Playdate: Scavenger Hunt will be available starting August 6. The catch? It'll only be available on HBO Max. Most new episodes of Sesame Street debut on HBO first, and then head over to PBS after a nine-month delay. At the moment, there is no announced plan to show the new Elmo special on PBS.

If you already subscribe to HBO through your cable provider, you probably have access to HBO Max, and you can access the channel from any one of these supported providers. (It doesn't work with Amazon Fire Stick or Roku devices, which is annoying.) Some AT&T plans also come with a free year of HBO Max.

If you don't subscribe to HBO and this is the thing that will tip the scale toward becoming a subscriber, you'll have to sign up for the service. It costs $15/month — which is pretty expensive as far as streaming services go — but you do get a free, seven-day trial to see if you like it before you commit. And if you want to watch Elmo's Playdate, just make sure August 6 falls within your free, seven-day window.
