Every year in Canada, it’s estimated that more than half of all food produced in the country goes to waste, a staggering amount that equates to nearly $50 billion lost.
Much of that waste comes through manufacturing and distribution, but household food waste still accounts for over $10 billion in wasted products. We can all do our part to cut down on food waste by only buying what we actually need, as well as getting better about food preparation and storage to help extend the life of our produce, meats and grains.
Products like the FreshWorks Produce Saver Food Storage Containers are advertised as being able to help keep fruits and veggies fresh longer, but do they actually work?
What is it?
An innovative system of containers designed to help keep extend the longevity of fresh produce, the FreshWorks Produce Saver Food Storage Containers come with a pretty simple setup. Each container includes a clear plastic base, a CrispTray liner, and a lid that features a built-in filtration system.
These durable food containers are available individually in sizes small to large, as well as in a convenient set of three for the greatest value.
How does it work?
The containers feature FreshVent technology in every lid, which regulates the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide for the ideal produce environment. The filters are durable and long-lasting, and never need to be replaced, unlike other water or air filtration systems.
The CrispTray liner placed inside the bottom of each container helps keep moisture away from produce by elevating it slightly, which allows for greater airflow and reduced spoilage. It’s recommended that produce is placed into the containers unwashed and uncut, resulting in food that stays fresh up to 80 per cent longer.
What shoppers are saying
With a 4.5/5 star rating on more than 5,400 reviews, it’s safe to say that shoppers are loving the ease and convenience of the FreshWorks containers.
“I was so skeptical of this product, but I am so pleased with the results!” reads one five star review. “Typically after three to four days my strawberries start to wilt and after a week they're completely mouldy an inedible. I put a pint of strawberries in and over two weeks later they're still fresh and edible almost like the first day.”
“Since I live alone I was constantly throwing out produce that had gone bad before I had a chance to use it,” reads another. “The containers are definitely a solution to the problem as my fruit and veggies stay fresh so much longer.”
According to reviewers, the containers are easy to clean (they can go straight into the dishwasher), leakproof, and offer great value for the initial investment. The only potential downside is that the containers are on the pricey side, starting at $20 per piece, or $54 for a set of three.
“Well made, sturdy, attractive in the fridge and they work!” says one reviewer. “I gave it four stars because of the higher cost for this item. Still, it keeps your food fresher for weeks!”
Although the initial price for these containers may seem steep, the cost eventually balances out since longer lasting produce means fewer trips to the grocery store, as well as more money in your pocket by not having to throw away wasted food.
