This Mighty Proposal Between Power Rangers Shows Just How Romantic Cosplay Can Be

Even in this era of geek culture going mainstream, some may look down on the world of cosplay, in which grown men and women spend a lot of time and money to dress up as their favorite characters from comics, books, TV shows, and movies. But here’s one thing even the doubters can’t deny: It is wonderful and healthy for couples to share a passion for something. That much is clear when you watch the Facebook video of Anthony Grillo proposing to James Reese as they’re both dressed in their finest Mighty Morphin Power Ranger costumes.

The Dallas couple attended the Alamo City Comic Con on the last weekend of October and posed for photos and videos all over the convention center. After posing with their backs to each other, Grillo stepped away and got down on one knee before Reese turned around to see the ring. It’s the stuff of beautiful slash fiction.

“You guys know that Anthony and I never do anything mediocre; we always have to be over-the-top!” Reese said in the Facebook post that has been seen 168,000 times since Tuesday. “So, with that said, he had to make sure that the next step in our lives was more than special — it had to more Morphinominal! Anthony got down on one knee, in his Ranger suit to ask me to be his forever Ranger! Today, we are announcing our engagement! I said yes! Rangers Together, Love Forever!”

In addition to cosplaying together, the couple co-own Muscle Geek Physique, which offers personal training for “cosplay enthusiasts.”

Speaking to Gaymerbase.com, Grillo described what cosplay means to him, and his words basically make us wonder why we all don’t get involved: “Cosplay allowed me to meet my partner — James Reese — who is someone that I can suit up with, be nerdy with, geek out with. He and I have the opportunity to plan and design what we want to do next. I have someone in my life now that I can wear a Ranger helmet around without criticism or judgment. He makes me want to be a better Ranger! Cosplay has allowed me to become involved with a community of people that understand me when I make a comic book reference or get giddy about the release of the new Power Rangers movie. It has allowed me to express a side of myself that I find pure happiness in and I don’t have to hold back from expressing!”

Still doubt the romantic power of a good costume? Watch this proposal between a couple dressed as Star Wars: The Force Awakens characters Kylo and Rey at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Or witness the glee on Captain America: Civil War star Sebastian Stan’s face as he got to be a part of a proposal between two fans, both dressed as the Winter Soldier, at Wizard World in Philadelphia this year.

Finally, this proposal between Harry Potter fans at New York Comic Con in October is the epitome of awkward sweetness.
