TIFF red carpet report card: The good, the bad and the ugly

One of the most talked-about looks from this year’s red carpet – and for good reason! For the “Deepwater Horizon” premiere, Hudson walked the red carpet in a semi-sheer, lacy Alexander McQueen gown with sequined detailing. The only thing that could have made this look better? Ditch the pearls in favour of something a little tougher and go for loose waves.

Sometimes, simplicity really is best – especially when it’s in the form of this gorgeous one-shouldered white column gown that perfectly showcased Amy Adams’s figure. Combined with Veronica Lake-style curls, this look screams old Hollywood glam.

This stunning red gown fits like a glove, and the collar detailing is incredible – just not sure about the cut of the shoulders.

This is fun, and a nice departure from Jen’s usual looks, but it would be better as a mini.

Green Gucci is a surefire recipe for success – but this frock left 22-year-old Dakota Fanning looking much younger than she really is.

That’s it! This draped, velvet gown from Dolce & Gabbana let the usually bright star show off her dark side – and we love it.

Saccharine in a Chanel mini flecked with candy-like beading. We would have loved to see this sweet look with a slick, dramatic hairstyle.

Close but no cigar for the actress, who wore a stuffy sequined dress while attending the InStyle party.

It’s not awful, but ScarJo can do so much better.

This would be so much better without the bow.

Shining in silver on the red carpet, the lack of accessories and simplicity of her hair left this looking feeling a little flat.

We liked this ethereal, floaty number, but after seeing what she wore in Venice, we feel a little cheated.

Eh.

Work it, girl. Hudson showed off her curves in a red hot gown, and finished things off with an equally bright lip.

A bit too mummy-esque for our taste.

This is pretty, but from someone as fashion-forward as Rooney, we were expecting something a little more “look at me.”

We just couldn’t get into the leather bodice of this Louis Vuitton dress.

She looks good, as always, but the dress is ho-hum.

This would jump to a B without the shoulder detailing – maybe an A with different shoes and some bling.

This is fun, but again, after seeing the stunning looks she rocked in Venice…we wanted more.

Zhang stepped out in this incredible architectural gown on one of the first days of the festival – and it remained one of our favourite (if not the favourite) looks of this year’s red carpets.

The Oscar winner went for something a little different than her usual on the red carpet – and while we appreciate the stunning detailing of this Alexander McQueen gown, Larson seems more suited to something like what she wore at this year’s Oscars.

Cute, but kind of boring.

A super confusing look with ruffles, cutouts, sequins….just way too much going on.

But this was much, much worse.

What do you do when you have a sty? Work an eye patch. Eyewear aside, the 79-year-old star looked stunning on the red carpet in a champagne-hued jacket and silk trousers.

A pretty rainbow frock with an asymmetrical hem and neckline earns top marks.

Sheer, lace and a leather belt = too much in one outfit. Her hair looks great, though.

Better, but still falls short.

Ow, ow! You might be used to seeing her as Crazy Eyes on “Orange Is The New Black,” but Aduba sure cleans up well. She looked glamorous in a red gown with a thigh-high slit.

Shimmery green for the earthy beauty.

Lose the gloves and the giant flower and this would be a perfect look for Pam.

We wish so badly that this was a mini. The bodice is great, but the full length skirt (even with the sultry slit) really weighs it down.

Fun and flirty.
