TIFF red carpet report card: The good, the bad and the ugly
- 1/45
Kate Hudson – Grade: A-
One of the most talked-about looks from this year’s red carpet – and for good reason! For the “Deepwater Horizon” premiere, Hudson walked the red carpet in a semi-sheer, lacy Alexander McQueen gown with sequined detailing. The only thing that could have made this look better? Ditch the pearls in favour of something a little tougher and go for loose waves.
- 2/45
Amy Adams – Grade: A+
Sometimes, simplicity really is best – especially when it’s in the form of this gorgeous one-shouldered white column gown that perfectly showcased Amy Adams’s figure. Combined with Veronica Lake-style curls, this look screams old Hollywood glam.
- 3/45
Amy Adams (again) – Grade: A-
This stunning red gown fits like a glove, and the collar detailing is incredible – just not sure about the cut of the shoulders.

- 4/45
Jennifer Garner – Grade: B
This is fun, and a nice departure from Jen’s usual looks, but it would be better as a mini.
- 5/45
Dakota Fanning – Grade: C
Green Gucci is a surefire recipe for success – but this frock left 22-year-old Dakota Fanning looking much younger than she really is.
- 6/45
Dakota Fanning – Grade: B+
Getting better in a figure-enhancing red frock from Cinq à Sept.

- 7/45
Dakota Fanning – Grade: A
That’s it! This draped, velvet gown from Dolce & Gabbana let the usually bright star show off her dark side – and we love it.
- 8/45
Emma Stone – Grade: B+
Saccharine in a Chanel mini flecked with candy-like beading. We would have loved to see this sweet look with a slick, dramatic hairstyle.
- 9/45
Nicole Kidman – Grade: D-
Close but no cigar for the actress, who wore a stuffy sequined dress while attending the InStyle party.

- 10/45
Scarlett Johansson – Grade: C
It’s not awful, but ScarJo can do so much better.
- 11/45
Gina Rodriguez – Grade: B
This would be so much better without the bow.
- 12/45
Michelle Williams – Grade: B+
Shining in silver on the red carpet, the lack of accessories and simplicity of her hair left this looking feeling a little flat.

- 13/45
Natalie Portman – Grade: B
We liked this ethereal, floaty number, but after seeing what she wore in Venice, we feel a little cheated.
- 14/45
Michelle Rodriguez – Grade: C
Eh.
- 15/45
Jennifer Hudson – Grade: A
Work it, girl. Hudson showed off her curves in a red hot gown, and finished things off with an equally bright lip.

- 16/45
Lily James – Grade: C-
A bit too mummy-esque for our taste.
- 17/45
Rooney Mara – Grade: B
This is pretty, but from someone as fashion-forward as Rooney, we were expecting something a little more “look at me.”
- 18/45
Rooney Mara – Grade: A
Like this!

- 19/45
Rooney Mara – Grade: D
We just couldn’t get into the leather bodice of this Louis Vuitton dress.
- 20/45
Diane Lane – Grade: B-
She looks good, as always, but the dress is ho-hum.
- 21/45
Rashida Jones – Grade: C+
This would jump to a B without the shoulder detailing – maybe an A with different shoes and some bling.

- 22/45
Camila Alves – Grade: A-
Lovely in lace.
- 23/45
Suki Waterhouse – Grade: B
This is fun, but again, after seeing the stunning looks she rocked in Venice…we wanted more.
- 24/45
Ziyi Zhang – Grade: A+
Zhang stepped out in this incredible architectural gown on one of the first days of the festival – and it remained one of our favourite (if not the favourite) looks of this year’s red carpets.

- 25/45
Brie Larson – Grade: C+
The Oscar winner went for something a little different than her usual on the red carpet – and while we appreciate the stunning detailing of this Alexander McQueen gown, Larson seems more suited to something like what she wore at this year’s Oscars.
- 26/45
Reese Witherspoon – Grade: B-
Cute, but kind of boring.
- 27/45
Naomi Watts – Grade: F
No.

- 28/45
Lupita Nyongo – Grade: A
Colour coordination at its finest.
- 29/45
Anne Hathaway – Grade: D-
A super confusing look with ruffles, cutouts, sequins….just way too much going on.
- 30/45
Anne Hathaway – Grade: F
But this was much, much worse.

- 31/45
Vanessa Redgrave – Grade: A
What do you do when you have a sty? Work an eye patch. Eyewear aside, the 79-year-old star looked stunning on the red carpet in a champagne-hued jacket and silk trousers.
- 32/45
Naomie Harris – Grade: A
A pretty rainbow frock with an asymmetrical hem and neckline earns top marks.
- 33/45
Vera Farmiga – Grade: D-
Sheer, lace and a leather belt = too much in one outfit. Her hair looks great, though.

- 34/45
Vera Farmiga – Grade: C-
Better, but still falls short.
- 35/45
Uzo Aduba – Grade: A+
Ow, ow! You might be used to seeing her as Crazy Eyes on “Orange Is The New Black,” but Aduba sure cleans up well. She looked glamorous in a red gown with a thigh-high slit.
- 36/45
Shailene Woodley – Grade: B+
Shimmery green for the earthy beauty.

- 37/45
Pamela Anderson – Grade: C-
Lose the gloves and the giant flower and this would be a perfect look for Pam.
- 38/45
Jennifer Connelly – Grade: D+
We wish so badly that this was a mini. The bodice is great, but the full length skirt (even with the sultry slit) really weighs it down.
- 39/45
Taraji P. Henson – Grade: B+
Fun and flirty.

- 40/45
Elizabeth Chambers – Grade: A
Showing off her newly-announced baby bump in a glittery mini.
- 41/45
Gemma Arterton – Grade: B
A pretty velvet look.
- 42/45
Lily Rose Depp – Grade: B-
We like the flirty frock, but the shoes feel too ‘90s.

- 43/45
Bryce Dallas Howard – Grade: C
It hurts our eyes!
- 44/45
Olivia Wilde – Grade: B+
Not the most exciting look on the red carpet, but we love the plunging neckline combined with long, flowy sleeves.
- 45/45
Parker Posey – Grade: F
Just…no.
