OK, so you’ve probably heard of acupuncture, the traditional practice in Chinese medicine. It’s where a practitioner inserts very thin needles into the body at specific “acupoints.” The method has been around for centuries, and people often praise it for treating inflammation and sore muscles, improving sleep, treating anxiety and stress, improving digestion or even supporting fertility.

Wellness companies like WTHN make it easy to try acupuncture for yourself in their NYC studios. But some people just aren’t needle people, while others may not have the time or money to go for regular appointments. However, TikTok recently discovered a great alternative: Acupressure mats.

Acupressure mats leverage the same idea as acupuncture but without the needles. Have you ever been seasick and worn those knit sea bands? It’s just like that. The mat has gentle, spiky circles to stimulate and activate pressure points across the body. These mats could promote deeper relaxation, help treat pain like tech neck and headaches or even help you destress — and all you have to do is lie on it. Of course, it’s also pretty painless.

Acupressure mats have just started gaining popularity on TikTok. WTHN posted a video sharing a few reasons to use its Acupressure Mat on the platform, and it currently has over 1.2 million views.

The brand’s acupressure mat features a soft linen fabric and natural coconut fiber filling, so it feels pretty luxurious. It’s sold as a set, so it comes with the mat (which is 16 inches by 9 inches), a memory foam acupressure pillow, a linen carrying case and a how-to guide. It’s small enough to roll up and keep in your closet, or you could even take it with you on a trip.

WTHN recommends using the mat in a few different ways: In the morning, you can stand on it barefoot to feel energized. Post-working out, you can sit on it to relieve tight hamstrings, glutes and IT bands. While working from home, you can place the mat on your chair to keep circulation moving throughout your lower back and hips. And at night, you can lie down on it with the pillow under your neck, slowly move your head from side to side and take deep breaths to relax the mind and body before going to bed.

Keep in mind that acupuncture and acupressure are not FDA-evaluated or intended to prevent or cure any diseases. But if you’re skeptical, just know there’s no harm in trying the acupressure mat. There are no chemicals, needles or appointments — it’s just a spiky mat that you sit, stand or lie down on. However, once you try it, the benefits will surely have you hooked.
