After a long, hot summer, there’s nothing better than settling into the comfortable coziness of Fall. But before you pack up your patio furniture and head indoors, it’s time to give your home a much needed deep cleaning. That’s right - just like Spring, Fall is an ideal time to give your abode a thorough, disinfecting cleaning.

A clean home is a healthy home, and with cooler temperatures leading to more time spent indoors, it’s important to ensure that our most used surfaces, areas and appliances are wiped down and free of months of accumulated dust, grime and bacteria.

Ready to get started? We’ve gathered some helpful cleaning tips for each room of your house to help you get started on your Fall cleaning checklist with ease.

Clean High-Traffic Areas

For an added level of reassurance around the house, it’s a good idea to give an extra clean to high-traffic areas that your family is frequently touching with their hands — like a light switch, doorknobs or toilet flusher. Simply wipe down with a multi-purpose cleaner (or a disinfectant wipe) a couple times a week.

It’s also a great reminder for your family to exercise proper hand-washing hygiene — frequently washing hands with warm water and soap for a minimum of 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the washroom, or after being outside, especially in public areas.

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and while it’s an area that’s frequently cleaned and tidied, a deep kitchen clean can help rid your home of unwanted germs and bacteria.

For appliance exteriors, clean using an all-purpose antibacterial spray, or if you have stainless steel appliances, a stainless steel spray won’t leave streaks or spots. As an added bonus, Weiman can also be used on sinks, range hoods and grills.

One of the most used appliances in the home is undoubtedly the oven and stove top. Remove all oven racks and let sit in soapy water for several hours and wipe clean. For the cooktop, a cooktop cleaner can easily remove tough stains and leave a shining, clean finish.

And while it may be easy to remember to clean the areas you’re cooking on, what about the areas you’re prepping food on? Countertops can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria, especially if you’re working with raw meat. To ensure your family stays safe and healthy while helping you out in the kitchen, give your counter (especially around the sink) a good wipe down with a kitchen cleaning spray every time you cook.

When it comes to Fall bathroom cleaning, it’s important to focus on disinfection. While there are products that are great for day-to-day use, a deep clean of your bathroom's tile and grout is important to avoid, or remove, unsightly mildew and limescale.

A multi-purpose cleaner can be used on everything from toilet bowls, tile, shower heads, sinks, shower doors and bathtubs to effectively remove calcium, lime and hard water deposits.

Living rooms are often the congregating area for the entire family - including pets. To cut down on vacuuming and washing floors separately, there are products like the BISSELL® CrossWave™ All-in-One Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum which allow you to vacuum, mop and deep clean hard-sealed floors (tile and hardwood) and area rugs with the switch of a button. For carpeted rooms with thicker pile, vacuum and tackle deep cleans using a carpet cleaner or extractor like the Hoover® SmartWash+ Automatic Carpet Washer.

Wipe down baseboards, furniture and all electronics, including TV surfaces and remotes, and launder any pillow coverings, wall hangings and blankets. For pet owners, a vacuum like the Bissell ProHeat 2X® Revolution™ Pet Pro Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner can help remove stains, dirt and pet odour — and also acts as a regular vacuum for everything from spills to dust.

With temperatures cooling, now is a good time to unpack your warmer bedding, and launder any comforters, sheets and blankets. Be sure to vacuum and clean under beds and furniture, clean any light fixtures, blinds and curtains and windows. As an added touch, install a diffuser, like the HomedicsConnect Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser to emit calming fragrance.

An air purifier, like this one from Dyson, simultaneously purifies and heats any room. It also monitors your air quality with the Dyson Link app to detect airborne particles and gases, then diagnoses and reports them in real time — so you can rest assured you’re breathing only the cleanest air possible.
