Tom Petty's daughter wore a special jacket with sentimental value to see him at the hospital

When AnnaKim Violette Petty got the call to come to see her father, Tom Petty, at the hospital following a heart attack, she grabbed a jacket and bolted. But in her hurry she was still methodical about her fashion choice, selecting a specific coat with lots of sentimental meaning.

The maroon blazer she brought with her to sit at her father’s bedside had black lapels and skull-and-crossbones patches. It was also embellished with brown branches that featured hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs growing from them sewn into it in red and black. These designs were on the back and front.

Why did AnnaKim choose this jacket? The 66-year-old singer, who died Monday night, had it made for her. “My dad had matching stage clothes made for me as a kid,” AnnaKim began her caption of an Instagram photo of the jacket. “[T]his jacket still fits me.” She explained that it was made by Glen Palmer, who in the 1980s ran the now defunct Sunset Boulevard boutique Granny Takes a Trip. He made clothes for rock legends like Petty. “[W]hen I got the call to come to the hospital I grabbed this jacket and I’m still wearing it.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Petty wore his matching jacket in 1996.

In honor of her father, AnnaKim changed her Instagram handle to “dadlivesmatteronelove” and has posted many photos of him in the past 24 hours.

She also shared a few selfies from the hospital, including one in which she’s wearing the jacket. The caption reads, “96 tears was the first song my dad taught me to play thank you for all the love this has been the longest day of my life.”
