Word to the wise: You may want to reconsider wearing shorts next time you fly.

According to long-time flight attendant Tommy Cimato there are "five things you should never do on an airplane" — and wearing shorts is one of them. Cimato recently shared a video to TikTok with a PSA to prospective travellers that has earned more than 3.4 million views.

Cimato begins by cautioning viewers to avoid touching the flush button or lever whenever you use an airplane bathroom with their bare hands.

It's honestly just super unsanitary. It's pretty gross," he said. "So when you flush, use a napkin or tissue."

Cimato's second tip to travellers is to stay hydrated on flights and drink "about 16 ounces" of water for each flight. According to experts, the low cabin pressure and altitude can cause you to feel dehydrated, or your throat and eyes to feel dry.

Even though travellers may be tired, Cimato advised passengers to avoid resting their heads on the plane window— no matter how tempted they may be.

"You're not the only one who has done that and you don't know how many people or children have wiped their hands or other things all over the window," he said.

Cimato's cautioned people to avoid wearing shorts while they fly, something many people do when traveling in the summer or to warmer destinations.

"Don't wear shorts while you're on an airplane. It's the same thing as the window — you never know how clean it's going to be," Cimato said. "So if you have pants, you're going to have fewer germs."

Lastly, he lets viewers know that if they're ever feeling sick on a flight, they should notify a flight attendant and ask for food to settle their stomach or a bag if they need to vomit.

Cimato's video was met with utter disgust from viewers who were surprised to learn that the inside of an airplane doesn't get sanitized between flights.

"So, you're telling me you don't clean/sanitize the plane after every flight?" one person asked, while another added, "Aren't you supposed to clean everything in between flights?"

"Tell me you don't clean the plane in between flights without telling me you don't clean the plane in between flights," another TikTok user commented.

"This just proves they don't clean the inside of the planes," someone else wrote. "In conclusion, the whole plane is dirty."

"What you're saying then is the inside of planes never gets disinfected," added another. "Even with COVID-19 kicking around?"

"So unsanitary," another person added.

Cimato responded to one of the comments, clarifying that it is not the responsibility of the flight attendants on board to clean the inside of the cabin, but rather a separate crew.

"The ground crew does all the plane cleaning," he wrote. "They try their best to keep it clean, but this is just in case it gets missed."
