The Top 2 Food Trends To Look Out for in 2024, According to a Food Editor
It's going to be a very good year for groceries.
What do you get when you take two food editors from Simply Recipes and drop them into a giant room with thousands of grocery products and let them try everything their heart desires? It turns out the answer is a whole lot of thoughts, opinions, and mild indigestion (I blame it on the cheese).
Laurel and I attended the Fancy Food Show in Las Vegas last week, where we walked around the LA Convention Center for six hours tasting everything that came across our path. We found a few favorite products in the mix—including this outrageous pickle dip, a brownie ice cream sandwich worth going out of your way for, and this dreamy lemon paste which would make the best lemonade. And this marshmallow that came in a can? I mean come on.
We also started to notice some clear trends in the new products that we tried. Some of these products have yet to go nationwide, and some are still in their incubator phase. Regardless, these two trends are coming for you in 2024—and you should get excited.
Passion Fruit and Yuzu Are the Flavors of 2024
Overwhelmingly, the flavors we saw again and again throughout the show were passion fruit and yuzu. In the New York Times menu report that just came out, they also noticed that yuzu is everywhere. Personally—as someone who made a passion fruit curd cake for their wedding last year—I couldn't be more into this development.
This trend showed up in a lot of drinks, including this absolutely delicious sparkling passion fruit Agua Fresca from Frescos and this yuzu sparkling water and juice from Kimino that I could drink by the gallon. I also really enjoyed this cold brew hibiscus tea with tangerine and yuzu from The Republic of Tea. There was a passion fruit butter from Liko Lehua, and too many chocolates filled with passion fruit to count.
Upgraded Charcuterie Boards Are THE Moment
Girl Dinner? Oh yeah, she's here to stay. For the uninitiated, the concept of "Girl Dinner" is about how people—particularly women—eat when they're by themselves. It's way more snacky, and can look like chicken nuggets and grapes or a cheese board with popcorn. Sometimes there's wine. It's random and weird and delightful.
As Laurel and I walked around Fancy Food, we noticed a ton of little upgrades for charcuterie boards which played off the Girl Dinner concept. A few examples include Girl Meets Dirt—which had a great sampling of jams and preserves that were supposed to be paired with cheese boards. There was alsoWine Chips, which is exactly what it sounds like—chips that are supposed to be paired with wine. And Drink Biscuits, which are a variety of delicious biscuits that were meant to be paired with—you guessed it—drinks.
Have you seen these trends at your supermarket? If not, keep an eye out in 2024—and in the meantime, try pairing your potato chips with wine, or making a passion fruit curd.
