Man dead, teen injured in 2 separate shootings in Toronto Thursday night

A man was killed and a teen was injured in two separate shootings in Toronto Thursday night.

Police say they were called to a parking lot in the area of Middlefield Road and McNicoll Avenue in Scarborough just before 10 p.m.

Emergency crews found a male victim in a vehicle suffering from at least two gunshot wounds, Toronto police Insp. Jim Gotell told reporters at the scene.

The victim's injuries were "very severe," Gotell said, and he was pronounced dead.

Friends and family near the scene identified the victim as 25-year-old Charankan Chandrakanthan, who worked at a nearby printing shop. They laid down candles and flowers near the scene of his shooting.

"He was probably the most kind, honest, loyal person you could ever meet," said Sathu Sri, a childhood friend.

"This is really tragic and I'll never forget about this moment."

Homicide detectives and forensic investigators were also at the scene late Thursday and into Friday morning. ETF officers also attended as investigators tried to track suspects or witnesses who fled the scene. Those efforts were unsuccessful, Gotell said.

It appears there was a party in the parking lot, he added.

"We are asking if anybody is a witness to this — because we know at the time the ambulance arrived there were several people in this parking lot who subsequently left — so if anybody wants to come forward, we're asking that people who saw what happened come forward and contact 42 Division."
