Tough morning for Starbucks fans: At least 3 of Wichita’s busiest shops close temporarily

It’s a confusing day for Starbucks fans in Wichita as several of the city’s most popular drive-through coffee shops are closed amid staffing shortages.

The Starbucks at Central and Rock — Wichita’s first standalone store — is closed and won’t reopen for five days, said an employee there. Too many staff members are sick.

Meanwhile, Central and Hillside also is closed today, though an employee there said the store should be able to reopen on Saturday. And 21st and Amidon also is also closed today. The sign on the door says it will also reopen on Saturday.

An employee at the Starbucks at Kellogg and West said that shop was way busier than normal as people drove from Starbucks-less neighborhoods to get their fixes.

Starbucks has made national headlines all week. The chain, which previously had required its U.S. workers be vaccinated against COVID-19, announced to employees in a memo earlier this week that it was dropping that requirement after the Supreme Court voted to reject the Biden administration’s plan to require vaccines or regular testing for companies that have more than 100 workers.
