Whether its cookie butter, chicken parmesan “lollipops,” or zucchini fries, Trader Joe’s has always been on the forefront of trendy food products, but their latest creation combines ingenuity with the increasing consumer demand for healthier packaged foods.
This sleek and sexy pizza redesign doesn’t come with heated seats, XM Radio, gluten, carbohydrates, but customers are still going bonkers over the seemingly simple pie base. Trader Joe’s notified their fan base of the new item via their Instagram account, @thetraderstable, writing, “Cauliflower Pizza Crust is here at Trader Joe’s, grab a box or two before they sell out!” This is just the next logical iteration of the cauliflower obsession which has seen broccoli’s cruciferous cousin riced, mashed, and risotto-ed.
The TJ’s cauliflower pizza crust is described by customers as something between bread and polenta, but when it’s cooked for a little bit longer the texture becomes more like a crispy flatbread. The 10.6-ounce crust comes frozen, and is made from a combination of cauliflower and corn flour. The entire crust clocks in at a modest total of 460 calories, which is better than traditional, wheat-based pizza crusts. Making cauliflower crust at home isn’t impossible (we have a recipe here), but it does take some time and a sink-full of dirty dishes, so if you’re feeling adventurous or gluten-free, pick up a box — as long as they haven’t sold out yet.
