I don’t know what it is about a cable knit sweater that screams “holidays” to me - but as soon as mid-November hits, they’re basically all I want to wear. I’ve gone through several over the past few years and it’s kind of been a Goldilocks-type story: the store-bought one is too itchy, too synthetic, while the ones I’ve found while vintage shopping are better quality but the fit is terrible.

I had pretty much given up until I came across Tradlands’s Modern Fisher Sweater. Priced at $301 CAD ($227 USD), this 100% cotton number has the detailing of a vintage fisherman sweater, like the diamond knit pattern, but features modern twists, like a rolled sleeve and hem.

If you’ve read my recent reviews, you’d know that Tradlands has quickly become one of my favourite brands. I first stumbled across the ethical, sustainable, U.S.-produced brand earlier this year and have already added three items to my wardrobe: the Box T-shirt, the Chore Coat and the Shelter Cardigan (and FYI - I’ve reviewed them all here!)

The Tradlands Modern Fisher Sweater

After seeing the Fisher Sweater all over Instagram from my favourite sustainable bloggers, I was on board - but it wasn’t until the brand released a special holiday run of the sweater, in Birch (a wear-with-everything neutral cream) and and Smoke (a dark, ashy grey) that I took the plunge.

For some reason, I’ve always been wary of cotton as a winter fabric — but sustainable brands like TradlandsEverlane and Babaa have completely changed my mind. The Modern Fisher Sweater, in particular, is heavyweight without being too constricting, and the rolled sleeves and traditional pattern make it classic without being too formal. I got my usual size, small, and it fits like a dream — it’s relaxed without being too loose (the chest measures about 21” when lying flat, for reference), and looks perfect tucked in or left loose.

If you’re thinking about taking the plunge, Tradlands is currently offering 20% off the Modern Fisher sweater with the code SWEATER20 until Saturday at 11:59 p.m. PST.

Since I’ve already been wearing this non-stop, I rounded up three ways I’ll be styling the fisherman-style sweater this holiday season.

Dinner with family (or friends!)

The classic fisherman silhouette combined with cool boots and a patterned jacket is a perfect way to stay festive without wearing your ugly Christmas sweater. Add a pair of relaxed jeans for a little bit of post-dinner breathing room, and top off with a cute zodiac sign necklace.

Outdoor Adventure:

Whether you’re heading out for a winter walk, going to skate on a frozen pond or heading to the chalet, a fisherman sweater will keep you cozy. Since it looks just as good untucked as it does tucked it, we paired this with comfy leggings, a colourful parka, a pair of sherpa-lined boots and a cute hat and mittens to combat even the chilliest days.

Holiday Party:

A sweater doesn't have to be reserved for a casual occasion. Dress it up with a sparkly skirt, vampy boots and a winter white handbag.
