On Tucker Carlson Tonight Tuesday, Carlson continued the Fox News offensive against Meghan Markle following her interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired Sunday night. In the wide ranging interview, Markle spoke about how her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, had made her cry during the week leading up to her wedding. While that wasn’t anywhere close to the entire story, that’s what Carlson decided to focus on, even going so far as to mockingly invoke one of the darkest days in American history.
“Here’s this royal person, one of the most famous and fawned over people in the world telling Oprah that she was incredibly wounded because she got into some sort of petty argument about dresses with her sister-in-law at her wedding three years ago. So stop the presses,” Carlson said before mockingly invoking one of the darkest days in American history. “She and her sister-in-law had a tiff about clothes. That’s never happened before. She thinks this is important enough to bring up in a television interview. It was her 9/11. So of course she considers it newsworthy. Okay, so she’s a narcissist.”
In failing to provide context, Carlson wildly misinformed his audience about the real issue of which Markle was speaking. Markle, who has been ruthlessly attacked by the British media for years, was making the assertion that the royal family did not protect her the way it protects others. The Middleton story was just an example. According to Markle, when tabloids reported several months after the wedding that it was Markle who made Middleton cry, the royal family did nothing to correct the story.
“They were willing to lie to protect other members of the family,” Markle said in the interview, “but they weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.”
