When it comes to the holiday season, many of us will be making a trip back home to visit family and friends, and with that comes the cost of driving or flying across the country.

While we can’t offer any tips for dealing with ways around the ever-increasing price of gasoline, we do have a few expert-approved tips for making the most of your next flight.

We spoke with Christie Hudson, Senior Communications Manager at Expedia, to get her top money-saving tips for Canadian travellers over the holidays.

When to book your flight

According to Hudson, if you haven’t booked your holiday flights yet, now is the best time to do it.

“We looked at travel data from last year and found that the cheapest time to book travel for the holidays was 14-20 days in advance of your departure date,” she said. “Travellers who booked during that window saved around 10% last year compared to the average.”

Cheapest days to fly

Air travel can be expensive, so choosing wisely when booking your flight can make all the difference in saving money. Every year, Expedia undertakes a massive analysis of flight data in partnership with the Airlines Reporting Corporation, and based on their 2019 report, the cheapest fares are generally found if you fly on the weekend.

Flights booked during the weekend yielded savings of 20% or more, and Sunday has emerged as the optimal day to book flights for the last two years running.

When to travel over the holidays (and which days to avoid)

According to the report, the most expensive day to start a trip was the Saturday before Christmas, as well as being the busiest.

On the other hand, the cheapest day to fly was Christmas Eve, with travellers paying around $100 less per ticket than those who started their trip on the Saturday before.

If you’re looking to book your flight now, don’t forget to check sites like Expedia, Booking.com, and Travelocity to compare deals and make sure that you’re getting the absolute best prices possible.
