Twitter Is Not Buying That Daenerys Targaryen Twist

In recent Game of Thrones episodes, we've watched Daenerys Targaryen morph into several forms: meek exiled princess, sharp survivor, firewalking dragon mother, beloved queen. But in season 8 of the HBO show, Dany has gone down another path entirely: unpopular tyrant-in-the-making.

Once upon a time she freed slaves and won the loyalty of hardened warriors. But since she arrived with paramour Jon Snow at Winterfell, her assured leadership and circumspect strategies have evaporated. Thanks to the deaths of her devoted protector Jorah Mormont, dragons Viserion and Rhaegal, and now her constant companion Missandei, she's close to friendless. And after Jon's secret-that he has the best claim to the Iron Throne-got out, her sworn advisers Varys and Tyrion started wondering what it might be like to have a totally different Targaryen in charge.

Daenerys is now beyond paranoid and reckless, which has led to cruel and thoughtless decisions, and she seems much more interested in the throne and revenge than benig a good ruler and her relationships. Which is fair in some ways, given how far she's come to get here. But it's hardly the makings of a good queen.

The show has been heavily foreshadowing a version of Dany who follows in her father, the "Mad" King Aerys Targaryen's footsteps. And tonight, we truly saw her. Nobody around her seems to like it-Tyrion and Jon are horrified when she and Drogon torch King's Landing after the surrender bells ring-and neither do fans of the show. Many even commented how unbelievable it was for Dany to turn into a violent vengeance-seeker this far into the show's run. Whatever you think of it all, Daenerys' recent actions are likely to change the finale's outcome considerably.
