Two First Ladies Hit the Campaign Trail

From Cosmopolitan

On Thursday, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama campaigned together for the first time, during an appearance at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Clinton’s campaign has called the first lady a “not-so-secret weapon," because her passionate speeches at the Democratic National Convention and on the campaign trail have galvanized supporters.

The event was a mutual love fest, but that didn’t stop either woman from some fiery lines about Donald Trump (though Michelle Obama still never used his name) and rousing sentiments about the future of the United States. Here are just a few highlights:

“It hasn’t been all hard work. She played a mean round of Carpool Karaoke. […] Among the many real privileges I’ve had is to see the president and first lady dance.” -Hillary Clinton, with a supporting GIF performance by Michelle Obama.

“Just by being herself everyday, never missing an opportunity to honor her parents for the hard work and sacrifice that set her on her way, [Michelle Obama] has shown every little girl and boy in America that there are no limits to what they can achieve if they work hard and do right and believe in themselves.” -Hillary Clinton

“And let’s be real, as our first African-American first lady, she’s faced pressures I never did, and she’s handled them with pure grace. By any standard she has been an outstanding first lady who has made us all so proud.” -Hillary Clinton

“For those who wonder, yes, Hillary is my friend.” -Michelle Obama

“As Hillary said, when you’ve raised children in the White House, you are reminded every day of the impact that you have. You start seeing the images of every child in this country in the face of your child. […] And that’s why every day, we try to be the kind of people, the kind of leaders that your children deserve, whether you agree with our politics or not.“ -Michelle Obama

“If Hillary doesn’t win this election, that will be on us. It will be because we did not stand with her. It will be because we did not vote for her, and that is exactly what our opponent is hoping will happen. That’s the strategy. To make the election so ugly and dirty that we don’t want any part of it.” -Michelle Obama

“I want you to remember that folks marched and protested for our right to vote. They endured beatings and jail time. They sacrificed their lives for this right. So I know you can get yourselves to the poll to exercise that right. Because make no mistake about it, casting our vote is the ultimate way we go high when they go low.” -Michelle Obama

“Remember, our neighbors are decent folks. We’re all good people who are openhearted and willing to listen. And while we might not change each other’s minds, we always walk away reminded that when it comes to what really matters, when it comes to our hopes and dreams of our children, we’re not all that different.” -Michelle Obama
