'Umbrella Academy' Was Renewed for Season 3

The second season of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix's time-travel super hero series, premiered last July, and a surprising cliff-hanger ending left fans wanting more. The series was renewed for a third season and viewers are anxiously waiting to see what happens.

Here's what we know about a potential third chapter for the series.

Umbrella Academy was officially renewed for season 3.

Netflix renewed the series in November 2020 and, in late August 2021, the show wrapped up filming. The cast shared the exciting news on Instagram, through showrunner Steve Blackman. Watch the announcement below.

As part of Netflix's Tudum showcase, the streamer debuted a new video of the Umbrella Academy cast, where they answered fans' "most burning questions." The cast also revealed their surprise at the season 2 finale, and their own favorite superheroes.

The showrunner had a storyline mapped out in advance.

"If we're lucky enough to have a season three, I have a very amazing season worked out," Steve Blackman told T&C over the phone ahead of season two's premiere.

"It's going to be great. And we have a worthy cliffhanger of what will hopefully be a very worthy season, but it will be different than what we've come to expect from the show. We'll see more and more of this wonderful dysfunctional family in a world that has changed for them. It's not their house anymore and their dad's alive and he's not supposed be. Things obviously, would be very different."

There's plenty of source material.

The Umbrella Academy is based on a comic series written by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance fame) and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. In addition to existing volumes, which Blackman could pull from, Way has prepared an 18-page document detailing what's to come in future editions of the comics, should Blackman want to use that in future seasons.
