Tom Ford kicked off New York Fashion Week on Wednesday night with a star-studded show, but it was clear one accessory stole the spotlight: the scarves. Almost every single look out of 44 included this classic winter accessory.

Make no mistake, these scarves may be simple in nature, but they were styled with Ford’s signature glam stamp. They were paired with svelte suits, slinky satin trousers, silky blouses, sophisticated blazers and coats, giving the traditional winter accessory a high-fashion upgrade. Ford shows you that a simple scarf can look elegant and luxurious with the right styling, silhouettes and proportions. Although the collection was quite different from Ford’s past, which tends to embrace maximalism over minimalism, the designs still felt inherently Ford’s, just from a different era. It possessed many similarities to Ford’s past work at Gucci where he acted as creative director during the ’90s. His designs for a Fall 1995 Gucci collection bear remarkable resemblances to this one, which was similarly rich in color, textures and tailoring.

Ford spoke to Vogue after the show about how the show’s inspiration hits much closer to home. “I’ve never really been a designer who’s talked about a moment in time, how that’s influenced what I design, but you can’t escape the news,” Ford said to Vogue. “I feel frustrated and agitated and exhausted. And I don’t want to wear anything particularly challenging or anything particularly aggressive.”
