This or That: The unhealthiest holiday cocktails


Many people use the holidays as an excuse to indulge in an extra drink or two…or more. But, you’d be surprised at just how many calories are packed into your favourite seasonal cocktails. Throw in mixers, syrups and sodas, and you’ll be battling the holiday bulge along with a bad hangover.

In this episode of This or That, we’ve compared the nutritional value of five popular holiday cocktails and narrowed down the worst for your waistline.

While there are some cocktails you can enjoy relatively guilt-free, at least one of these cocktails contains more calories and carbs than a McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with cheese.

We also spoke with Mohamed Rezk, registered dietitian and founder of Redirect Nutrition Consulting (RNC), to determine just how much of these festive drinks you can drink. The moderation metre works for someone who is 80 per cent or more consistent with a healthy lifestyle, and who is physically active two to three times per week.

5. Pina Colada, 6 oz.

– Calories: 660 (336 calories from sugar)
– Sugar: 80 g
– Moderation meter: Red — It’s OK to have 1 (smaller) serving per special occasion (no more than 2 on a regular week).

Bloody Mary, 5 oz.

– Calories: 125
– Sodium: 461 mg ( a healthy adult shouldn’t exceed 2,300 milligrams of sodium/day)
– Moderation meter: Yellow — It’s OK to have 3 servings per special occasion (no more than 3 – 4 on a regular week)

Long Island Iced Tea, 7 oz.

– Calories: 780
– Carbs: 44 g
– Moderation meter: Red — It’s OK to have 1 serving per special occasion (no more than 2 on a regular week).

Margarita, 12. oz.

– Calories: 552
– Sugar: 15.6 g
– Moderation meter: Red — It’s OK to have 1 (smaller) serving special occasion (no more than 2-3 on a regular week).

Eggnog cocktail, 7 oz.

– Calories: 343
– Sugar: 33 g
– Moderation meter: Yellow — It’s OK to have 2 servings per special occasion (no more than 4 on a a regular week)
