This it-girl favourite clothing brand now carries everything in size 00-40

Universal Standard’s commitment to changing the fashion world began with friendship.

Long before they were building a size inclusive clothing empire, Alexandra Waldman and Polina Veksler were two friends unable to shop together.

A size 18, Waldman’s shopping options were limited, despite living in the fashion hub of New York City.

After a trip to a department store opened Veksler’s eyes to the disproportionate number of options for women under a size 12, the pair began brainstorming on a way to provide quality clothing to women which now serves sizes 00 to 40.

“We all know that weight fluctuates (whether you're a size 6, 16 or 26). Sometimes you go up, sometimes you go down,” Waldman told TODAY. “Not only can this be an emotional roller coaster, it also comes with the financial burden of replacing your clothes, which can have real consequences on your life.”

The brand introduced a concept called Universal Fit Liberty, which replaces clothes purchased by consumers for free up to one year after purchase due to fluctuating weight. The returned clothes are washed and donated to charities that support women in need.

The clothing line has even enticed high fashion label Rodarte to collaborate on an affordable, size inclusive line of clothing.

“We had already been excited about what they were doing, and so when they reached out to us it was just like an amazing creative moment,” Rodarte co-founder Kate Mulleavy told Vogue of the collection. “I instantly felt when we all spoke on the phone that there was a creative spark and that we wanted to come together and do something really incredible.”
