'Voice' Fans Are Threatening to Not Watch the Show Over Kelly Clarkson's Exit

For weeks now, The Voice fandom has demanded to know when the NBC singing competition show would be returning. Though there were fears that longtime coach Blake Shelton was preparing to make his exit, no one was expecting Kelly Clarkson to give up her red chair on The Voice. Now, with the news still fresh, many are voicing their thoughts about singer-songwriter Camila Cabello replacing Kelly for season 22.

It all began on May 13 when Blake announced that he was coming back to The Voice via a clever TikTok. The country superstar encouraged other returning coaches to duet his video to reveal that they would be joining him. “#duet this if you’re going to be a coach on #TheVoice this fall..,” he wrote. One by one, the incoming roster of Voice coaches confirmed their attendance, including John Legend, Gwen Stefani and Camila. With that, it was official: Kelly would not be resuming her coaching duties after starring on the series for eight seasons.

“Introducing your Voice Coaches. 🎶 #TheVoice returns this fall with @blakeshelton, @johnlegend, @gwenstefani, and @camila_cabello,” the show’s official Instagram captioned the TikTok duets.

After seeing Camila make her unexpected entrance in the last few seconds of the clip, The Voice fans rushed over to the comments section with a mix of emotions. On one hand, many insisted on knowing what this meant for the “Since U Been Gone” singer. “OMG BUT WHERE’S KELLY 🥺,” one person wrote. On the other hand, some were ecstatic for the "Never Be the Same" singer. “OMG CAMILAAAA ❤️,” a different fan said.

Still, several fans seemed to have made up their mind on the big change. The Kelly Clarkson Show host first appeared on The Voice in February 2018 for season 14. “Not watching without queen @kellyclarkson,” someone wrote. “Not gonna lie- will probably pass on this season- without Kelly, its no fun! Camila does not compare,” another added. “Without Kelly, not gonna watch. She has the humor,” a fan said.

So, why did Kelly leave The Voice? After being crowned the winning coach last season with Girl Named Tom taking home the ultimate title, the American Idol alum didn’t mention anything about stepping away. That said, Kelly previously hinted that she was going to be changing up her work schedule to spend more time with her children (7-year-old daughter River and 6-year-old son Remington).

“I’ve decided this year there’s just [going to] be a couple changes for me that I can’t say here,” she said in an Instagram Live Q&A on January 12. “But there’s a couple things happening. I’ve been able to make more time just for me and my kiddos and still be able to work. Just where we can get away on weekends and really do some fun stuff with my kids.”

Kelly continued: “’Cause they only want to hang out with you for so long and that’s now so I gotta take advantage of that … I’m excited to have more time with them. I mean I have a ton of time in the morning but I don’t know, I’m selfish. They’re fun.”

During her time on The Voice, Kelly also juggled hosting and executive producing on The Kelly Clarkson Show. This spring, she pulled similar hosting/executive producer duties for the new singing competition show American Song Contest with Snoop Dogg. In other words, she had a jam-packed schedule. It’s true that The Voice will be different without Kelly but we’re crossing our fingers that she won’t be gone for too long.
