Wagatha Christie trial day 6: The biggest developments as Wayne Rooney says he was asked to tell Jamie Vardy 'your wife needs to calm down'

As day six of the Wagatha Christie trial gets under way, Jamie Vardy has accompanied his wife Rebekah Vardy to the Royal Courts of Justice.

Of course, the Rooneys are back too, and Tuesday morning saw Wayne take the stand to give his view on the incidents that unfolded.

Wayne Rooney was asked to tell Jamie Vardy 'your wife needs to calm down'

Wayne Rooney has told how he was asked by then England manager Roy Hodgson to speak to fellow footballer Jamie Vardy to ask his wife to “calm down” during the Euro 2016 tournament.

Giving evidence from the witness box, Rooney told the court that he had been asked to speak to Mr Vardy by Mr Hodgson and his then assistant manager Gary Neville.

He said: “They asked me, as captain, would I be able to speak to Mr Vardy on issues regarding his wife and I think we all knew that it was an awkward subject.

“I’d need to speak to Mr Vardy and ask him to speak to his wife and ask him to say to ask his wife to calm down.”

He added: “It was an awkward situation for me and I’m sure it was an awkward situation for Mr Vardy, but I felt it was in the best interests of the team.”

Rooney continued: “I spoke to Jamie 100%. I remember the conversation I had with Jamie. It was awkward for me to have to speak to a team-mate regarding his wife.”

He said the two footballers had gone into a games room to sit down and speak, with Vardy having a can of red bull and Rooney a coffee.

“It was such an awkward moment for me to have to speak to him,” Rooney said.

However, Jamie Vardy later denied any such conversation had taken place.

Rooney has called abuse directed at Rebekah Vardy “disgusting” and claimed he was hearing much of the Wagatha Christie detail for the first time as he'd not really spoken to wife Coleen about it.

He was asked by Vardy's barrister, Hugh Tomlinson QC if he had discussed with his wife the “very high level of abuse and trolling” that came after her October 2019 “reveal” post.

“Me sitting here in this court room, this trial is the first time I’m hearing almost everything in this case. It’s been a long week,” Rooney said.

He added: “I’ve never discussed it really with my wife.

The abuse Mrs Vardy has received, I think, is disgusting. It’s not right (for) a woman to receive that abuse. But I never really discussed being part of this, I’ve been here to support my wife.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy took the opportunity to point out that he and his wife talk about everything.

Jamie Vardy hits back at Wayne Rooney claims

It seems Wagatha Christie isn't just about the WAGs, as Jamie Vardy has hit back at various claims made by Wayne Rooney.

In a statement issued by Vardy’s representatives outside the hearing, the Leicester City player said: “Wayne is talking nonsense.

“He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016."

He then appeared to make reference to Rooney's claims that he hadn't spoken to Coleen about the case by adding: “There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”

The Vardys did not return to court after a short afternoon break.

Paul Stretford claims Rebekah Vardy did a deal for Caroline Watt to take the Instagram leak blame

Football agent Paul Stretford took the stand first on Tuesday morning and spoke about rumours that Rebekah Vardy had got her agent Caroline Watt to publicly take the blame for leaked stories about Coleen Rooney.

He said in his written evidence: “I believe, somewhere between 11th & 15th October, 2019, I cannot be more precise, I received a call from Ian Monk at Monk PR.

“Ian told me that he had been informed that a note had been sent round to all newsdesks that Rebekah Vardy had sacked Caroline Watt as her agent and that any and all updates or information about this matter would be coming from Kingsley Napley.

“Subsequently, I recall having a discussion with Ian Monk and it was my understanding that there were rumours circulating at the time that Rebekah Vardy was going to be severing ties with Caroline Watt albeit she would look after Caroline Watt behind the scenes in return for Caroline Watt publicly taking the blame for having leaked Coleen’s Instagram stories and posts to The Sun.”

Later in the day, an expert instructed by Rebekah Vardy admitted to Rooney's barrister that he found the lack of messages between Vardy and Watt, which she tried to explain as having been lost while trying to export and upload them as evidence, "somewhat surprising".

Barrister David Sherborne asked data expert Ian Henderson: “Clearly by surprised you’re saying that that is not what you would expect to have happened?”

“That is correct,” Henderson replied.
