Do you have “play more video games” on your New Year’s resolutions list? Maybe you should — it’s a great way to relax and keep busy during the harsh winter months. What's cozier than curling up on the couch with a controller and a new game for your Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch? Walmart has some great selections on sale right now — titles to keep you entertained and transport you far beyond the four walls of home.
Still looking for a PlayStation 5? If you didn’t score one over the holidays, we’ve got a great tip for you: Walmart puts some units aside for Walmart+ customers, meaning you get first dibs if you subscribe! You get free shipping on unlimited orders of eligible merch, which can even include groceries. You receive your goods quickly — overnight, or in some cases, the very same day. Walmart+ is only $13 a month, or $98 a year, and you get two free weeks to start. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to be out of that free trial period to access the special members-only sale, but it’s better than paying eBay prices.
PlayStation 5
Capture Demon Souls and save $29
If you really need a winter challenge, then Demon Souls should be right up your alley. The Dark Souls games are notoriously difficult, and this title is where it all started. Well, with a bit of a facelift for the PlayStation 5. This is actually a full remake, with graphics, audio and everything else redone to look “amazing” on your next-gen system. And it's only $40 right now, down 43 percent from it's normal price!
Shoppers say it’s “a wonderful launch title that shouldn’t be overlooked.” And though it’s “not for beginners,” another gamer offers some sage advice: “[The] key to [the] game is patience, guarding, dodging and backstab. Take your time, enjoy the beautiful detailed scenery and don't rush into a fight, and you'll love this game.” We’ll take that to heart!
Save $20 on Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
It's safe to say that the Mortal Kombat franchise is a classic at this point, and the recent Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate has everything gamers love about the series: Crazy, imaginative characters, thrilling moves and even silly features like "Friendship" to finish off your enemies. This version ups the stakes by adding even more characters from all sorts of media, like the Joker, Robocop and Rambo. Sounds crazy, but it's also super fun and on sale for only $40!
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is 50 percent off right now
Vikings are cool, and we’re not just saying that because they live way up north! This epic title lets you live the life of a Norseman… or Norsewoman (you get to choose your gender). You can go on raids, fight vicious battles and experience a grand, sweeping saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe. But you don’t need to be familiar with the series to get started — in fact, this game is a great starting point for this immersive series, with a fun history lesson to boot!
Gamers certainly love it, with one shopper calling it “one of the best open world games I have played.” That’s because “there is so much to do in this game, so many ways to build your character, so many ways to engage in combat. The graphics are amazing and finally a game where you can play as a Viking! This game has over 100 hours of gameplay. Highly recommended!”
PlayStation 4
Get 60 percent off Final Fantasy VII Remake
If your family gamer won't receive the PS5 this year, they still deserve a few new games to enjoy. There are still a lot of great games being released for the PS4 system, and there are plenty of deals to be had for titles old and new.
One popular new game is Final Fantasy VII Remake. The original was an instant classic upon its release back in 1997, and this remake gives it a super slick facelift.
A fan of the original says even though they hesitated to buy this new one, they were “not disappointed,” adding that it’s “faithful to the original story with a twist! Better storytelling with the improved graphics.”
Kingdom Hearts All-in-One Package is only $30 right now
If you haven't heard of the franchise, Kingdom Hearts is an action-packed role-playing game where Disney meets Final-Fantasy, and this collection has 10 of the games in the series collected together for one super low price. Kingdom Hearts All-in-One Package would still be a great bargain at its regular price of $50, but right now it's only $30. That's a crazy good deal, and your loved ones will love playing with Mickey, Donald and Goofy, as well as meeting new friends like Sora and Riku.
Shoppers note it's good for all ages, with one parent saying "My little one can even play it" and another enthusing "I bought Kingdom Hearts for my son and he can't stop talking about how much he is enjoying the game." If the kids love it this much, it'll certainly make a great addition to your own collection.
The moving Life is Strange: Before the Storm is only $8
Life is Strange isn’t your typical video game series. It’s a narrative adventure game that follows the turbulent story of a troubled teen, Chloe Price. It’s like a soap opera, with episodes and everything. If you like drama, this game has it in spades. Before the Storm is a prequel game to the main Life is Strange titles, taking place three years before the first game in the series. It’s good for newbies, as well as people who’d like to try out this type of game without the super-powered heroics that populate later installments. And it's only $8, a whopping 74 percent off!
Nintendo Switch
Get moving with Katamari Damacy: REROLL and save $10
In the Katamari Damacy series, you create stars (the kind in the sky) by rolling around a sticky ball that grabs everything in its path. Sound weird? Well it is, and it’s not long before you’re grabbing pets, people and even entire buildings. Normally, this crazy action game would run you $30 if purchased directly from Nintendo; right now at Walmart it’s just $20.
One player calls it a "fun, physics-based game that has the main character rolling a katamari ball over increasingly larger objects in order to create stars. [...] The controls are intentionally slightly unwieldy, but that's just part of the fun. This game is an insane riot!" This title will definitely bring some laughs.
Save $20 on Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Who needs Hogwarts? This school-based role-playing game pits you in life-and-death battles with your fellow students — and throws you into plenty of relationship drama in between! If you like your games with a little bit of romance, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is for you. You’ll want to play this over and over again to see all the story options! It’s rare to see deals like this on digital games too: you might not get a physical copy, but won’t need to wait for it to be delivered either, as it’s just a download away! And right now it's 30 percent off, only $40.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Complete Edition is only $12
Gamers revere this comic-book-based title from a decade ago, but until recently Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was super difficult to get. Now it’s been re-released on systems like the Switch, and players today can get all the insane beat-em-up action and cartoonish storytelling for only $12. Play as Scott Pilgrim, known by his bandmates as “the best fighter in the province,” or one of his friends against legions of thugs, zombies and oh yeah, angry exes!
Xbox
Save 50 percent on The LEGO Marvel Collection
LEGO plus an action-adventure franchise like the Avengers might seem like a weird mix at first, but they’re actually quite fun and great for all ages. This collection actually includes three games in the series: LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 and LEGO Adventures. And not only do you get three wonderful family-friendly adventures to play through but the set is also 50 percent off, only $15. That’s only $5 a game!
South Park: The Fractured But Whole is only $15 right now
This might sound a little crazy, but this role-playing game based on the crude cartoon from Comedy Central is actually really good. The city of South Park is fun to explore, the dialogue is razor-sharp and there are great items to discover. The combat is also awesome. We can't recommend South Park: The Fractured But Whole enough, and right now you can give it a shot for only $15, a whopping 76 percent discount off its regular price.
Shoppers agree, with one saying "If you like the show, you'll love the game. All the characters from the show coming together for a hilarious game that's just a good time." But even if you aren't the biggest fan, The Fractured But Whole also "challenges your problem solving and analyzing skills," and "it's funny and there's so much to do!" And you don't have to wait for the next season to enjoy this adventure!
Buy Mass Effect Legendary Edition and save $20
This classic series has it all: space cops, aliens, rebellion and even romance. And your decisions carry over from one game into the next, so you’ll want to play the entire trilogy. Good thing this title includes all three of the original Mass Effect games for only $40, plus lots of bonus content like extra weapons and armor. It’s even been remastered to look great on your 4K TV!
One player says “The graphics are amazing. Shepard looks great and the controls are so much better. This is a must-have for any Mass Effect fan. If you've never played the series before, this is a great opportunity to begin.” And other shopper calls it “the Star Wars Trilogy of video games” and a “must buy.” If you love the adventures of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, why not give Commander Shepard a try?
