Was Natalie Portman’s SAG Awards Dress Inspired by Melania Trump?

Amidst the sea of colored and bedazzled gowns at the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles, Natalie Portman stood out in a simpler option.

The 35-year-old pregnant actress, who was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Jackie, wore a crisp white gown featuring bell sleeves from Italian fashion designer Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Spring 2017 Dior couture collection.

On the red carpet, Portman spoke on the gown and the inspiration behind it.

“It just came off the runway last week and crazily fit. Shocking! It was very loose on the model,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m sure that even subconsciously I’m inspired by Jackie, who had such an incredible style,” she shared with People/Entertainment Weekly Network, referencing Jacqueline Kennedy, whom she played in the 2016 biographical film.

Yet while Portman credited the former first lady as her fashion muse, the dress did look strikingly similar to the gown our nation’s current first lady, Melania Trump, stepped out in while giving her speech at the Republican National Convention in July 2016.

In addition to the color, the bell sleeves on Trump’s $2,195 number from U.K.-based designer Roksanda Ilincic resembled those on Portman’s gown. FLOTUS’s formfitting style quickly sold out online on Net-a-Porter after she appeared in the dress at the convention, but it has since been restocked.

Although Portman might not have been looking to Melania for style inspiration, given that she spoke out about President Trump during the Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles, it’s easy to see both women have taken style cues from Jackie.

At the 74th Golden Globe Awards, Portman wore a sophisticated chartreuse Prada gown featuring three-quarter-length sleeves and jeweled detailing that resembled a style Jackie Kennedy wore to the Metropolitan Opera House in 1975.

Mrs. Trump also channeled the former first lady’s style during the Inauguration. She wore a powder blue Ralph Lauren ensemble that mirrored Jackie Kennedy’s outfit at her husband’s 1961 inauguration.

Considering Kennedy was revered for her classic style, it looks like many public figures and members of the celeb set will look to her for style inspiration for years to come.
