Waterside mansion once owned by the Fortnum & Mason family for sale in Richmond
An imposing waterside mansion nestled in leafy Richmond, once owned by the Fortnum and Mason family, is now on the market for the first time in nearly 40 years.
Walnut Tree House was thought to have been constructed in 1728 and initially served as lodgings for the owner of the adjacent brewhouse, Lincoln's Inn.
Previous esteemed owners of the property include Richard Fortnum, the son of the founder of Fortnum & Mason, as well as the British illustrator Enoch Ward. Richard took over the department store business in 1815, managing it until 1845.
The house is peppered with original features, including columns, stately pilasters and intricate mouldings. There are seven bedrooms, three bathrooms, five reception rooms and multiple cellar spaces for storage. It is believed that the original Georgian building remained as it was until the 1840s, when the two-storey Victorian extension was built. The property then remained intact until it was subdivided at the beginning of the 20th century.
While its current owners have undertaken a restoration of Walnut Tree House, some rooms could do with modernising.
The garden is remarkable, boasting a private mooring, river, pristine lawns, alfresco dining areas, waterside gazebo and boathouse. With plenty of opportunities for both play and relaxation, we imagine it would serve new owners very well.
'Walnut Tree House is a remarkable riverside mansion enviably positioned on the banks of the River Thames. The historic period home which dates from circa 1728 benefits from grand country house proportions and direct river access, while being within easy reach of central London,' says Daniel Killick, head of sales at Savills Teddington.
'This extraordinary home has been returned to its former glory and, with its wonderful 100 ft mature garden leading down to the river and private moorings, is ideally suited to a growing family who can enjoy boating from the garden to Richmond, Hampton Court Palace or further afield. Walnut Tree House comes to the market for the first time in nearly 40 years and provides a truly fantastic opportunity to access an idyllic riverside lifestyle.'
This property is currently on the market for £5,500,000 with Savills.
