Wedding guest faces backlash after wearing shorts and a hoodie on the big day

There’s nothing like wedding guest shopping with the perfect excuse to bag a new hat, frock and pair of shoes because nobody wants a serial outfit repeater.

But one woman turned up to her cousin’s big day dressed in a hoodie and shorts and unsurprisingly, the bride wasn’t very impressed.

The anonymous wedding guest took to Reddit to explain that her cousin’s mother told her that the autumn nuptials were going to be “unconventional” with a small and intimate ceremony in a scenic national park.

“The day before the wedding, my aunt rounded up me and my family members and told us that she just found out that the dress code for the wedding was casual,” she wrote. “Not going to lie, many of us were stoked. I hate dressing up so I was all over the idea of a casual backyard bbq wedding.”

“My husband and I had already packed nice clothes so we wore them to the ceremony. A few of my family members showed up to the ceremony in t-shirts and baseball caps,” the guest continued. “Immediately after, we changed into comfortable clothes for the reception. I wore a hoodie, Daisy Duke shorts and cute sandals.”

But to her and her husband’s surprise, not everyone was clad in casual attire for the evening celebrations.

“I noticed that the bride's family members were still dressed up but I figured they didn't get the memo,” she wrote. “The bride and groom and the wedding party were dressed to the nine's which I thought was weird for a casual wedding. The reception was awesome. Nice dinner, fancy lawn games, a bonfire. We had a blast.”

Yet when she returned home, the bride and groom admitted that they were very upset with the couple’s “disrespectful” decision to wear comfortable clothing. In fact, the wedding never had a laid-back dress code and it was a strategic move by the aunt in a bid to ruin the big day.

“Apparently my aunt lied to us because she wanted to sabotage their wedding and they were upset that no-one checked with them about the dress code,” she added. “This explains why my cousin and his wife have been standoffish towards us since the wedding.”

In search of advice, she asked the Reddit community if it was her fault for getting the dress code wrong.

“To be honest, we think they're overreacting because we all had fun at their wedding and it's not our fault we got bad info about the dress code,” she wrote. “And they never specified the dress code in the invitation. But I still have to ask. AITA? (Am I the a**hole)?”

A large majority of fellow Reddit users disagreed with her, believing the couple should have double checked the dress code before turning up.

“Daisy Dukes and a hoodie are not ‘casual’ in terms of wedding attire,” one commented. “Your attire was more like Saturday night at the stock car races. I would have been upset with you too and the family members in t-shirts and ball caps were similarly underdressed.”

Another agreed, adding: “Honestly I don’t blame the aunt for saying it’s casual dress, maybe she meant ‘I wanted them to have a black tie event but they’re not’. In what world do you hear casual wedding and show up in literal Daisy Dukes?”

While others think the couple should have got changed after realising they had made a mistake halfway through the evening.

“It wasn't as if they were just awkwardly stuck with casual clothes,” one Reddit user added. “They could have clarified and changed back.”
