#WhatFeministsWear Is Trending Because of Emma Watson

Emma Watson’s controversial March Vanity Fair spread — in which she is featured scantily clad in one of the images — is making headlines and yielding an interesting debate on feminism.

The photo at the center of the drama features Watson in little more than a $2,995 white Burberry crochet top.

Some took the image as an anti-feminist statement by the Beauty and the Beast star, who is very vocal on topics like women’s empowerment and equality in society.

Watson was confused by the reaction and those that labeled her “hypocritical” for posing in such a way. In an interview with Reuters, she explained that the controversy surrounding the photo shoot shows just how much of a misconception she believes is attached to feminism.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom. It’s about liberation. It’s about equality. It’s not — I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it,” she said.

Her words struck a chord with many women, who have rushed to her defense. The managing editor of HuffPost Voices, Jessica Samakow, tweeted an image of her sneakers in response to the controversy and urged Twitter uses to do the same — in order to combat the belief that feminists must dress or act a certain way.

The hashtag ‘#whatfeministswear’ has since trended on the platform, with many men and women uploading images of their clothing to break the stereotype and show that women support other women no matter how they dress.

Something tells us Watson is loving this Twitter trend.
