Who Needs an Engagement Ring When You Can Treat Yo’self to a Self-Love Ring?

Why wait for someone else to put a ring on it when you can do it your own darn self? That’s the premise behind Fred and Far’s Self Love Pinky rings, which are being heralded as anti-engagement rings. “Love thyself first then others,” the website reads. The rings retail between $150 and $325 and boast conflict-free gems. Fred and Far says the rings are supposed to act as a “daily reminder to choose and love yourself,” and they have already gained fans from the likes of Lucy Hale and Amber Rose.

Fred and Far’s self-engagement rings speak to a notion that has been gaining momentum over the last few years. Jo Piazza wrote for Elle about traveling to the Serengeti and buying a (beautiful) ring at a local shop — one that fit only on her left ring finger. Piazza, a Yahoo editor at the time, says she was hesitant to purchase it at first because she thought it would look like an engagement ring, even though she didn’t have a significant other at the time. Still, the girl at the shop convinced her to take the plunge. “‘It’s a beautiful ring. Who cares what finger it is on?’ She was so French and yet so right,” Piazza recounted.

As our ideas about marriage and relationships change, it should come as no surprise that the traditions that go along with them change also. Marriage rates in the U.S. are down, and more women are opting to remain single. Fred and Far’s Pinky ring comes at a time when it is becoming less common for women to be married at a certain age. It also reminds women, married or not, that in order to find someone who loves them, they must first love themselves. And if showing that love means treating yourself to some bling, why not?
