We caught up with supermodel and founder and CEO of the grant-giving organization, Every Mother Counts, Christy Turlington Burns, on Thursday night at the third annual LoveEMC fundraiser, An Evening to Benefit Maternal Health, and she had plenty to say on staying healthy.

EMC, an organization dedicated to eradicating unnecessary maternal deaths around the world, has been Turlington Burns's biggest project since it's founding in 2011. But when she's not busy helping save lives, you can find her in the yoga studio or out on a run--two of the ways she says she likes to stay active.

"Running and yoga, that's my thing," she told InStyle. "I became a runner in 2011 when I ran my first marathon in New York City and I've run six so far," she added. "I thought, 'I have two kids and I can do this two times and I'll be done.'" Four more marathons and ten half-marathons later, Turlington Burns is showing no signs of slowing down, and thanks yoga for helping to keep her going. "I've done yoga mainly for the last 30 years, so I feel like it's probably taken good care of my body."

Turlington Burns revealed that she starts every day with some form of physical activity, whether it be a run through the neighborhood or a yoga class: "Something physical, something that's for me and that allows me to have disconnection from electronics and all those things. And to really set my intentions for the day." Wise advice indeed.

Marathons hold even more significance for her, thanks to EMC's marathon, half-marathon, 5K, and 10K teams around the country. "The running has been fantastic in the way we've been able to build the community ... running is such a metaphor, especially distance running ... for birth," she said. " are things that take a long time, that need a lot of support and care. We've really all benefitted with that connection."
