Why We Don't Know the Name of Princess Beatrice's Baby Yet

Over the weekend, Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli-Mozzi welcomed their first child together, and while Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the couple are the proud parents of a baby girl, amongst the details of the birth, there's one noticeably absent: the baby's name.

The omission might strike some as odd—after all, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced the name of their daughter, Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, along with the news of her birth back in June—but it's actually something of a royal tradition to hold back on the announcement of royal baby names. Prince William and Kate Middleton didn't announce the names of their three children for several days after the births, while Charles and Diana waited a full week to make Prince William's name public. Still none of that compares to Prince Charles, whose name wasn't known publicly for a full month after he was born in 1948.

"The reasoning is perhaps two fold," royal commentator Victoria Arbiter told Town & Country in 2018. "On one hand there's a desire to inform the families before a public declaration is made and any new parent appreciates having a little private time to get to know their new addition before the onslaught of announcements. Royals, however, also have to consider the great responsibility in naming a new member of the family and I expect they want to be a hundred percent certain of their choice before announcing the name and sealing the baby's place in history."

As for when we might know the latest little royal's name, it's not quite clear, but given that Beatrice's sister, Princess Eugenie, waited almost two weeks to debut her son August's name in February, we might well be in for a bit of a wait.
